Option to change Respironics PR one (ASV) breath rate?

Post by Dave007 » Sun Sep 28, 2014 6:52 pm

Is there a setting to adjust the amount of time the machine reacts to me not breathing? If so what is the name of the setting that needs to be adjusted?

I have woken up several times gasping for air and it seems that the machine did not kick in the full pressure to get me to breath again because not enough time had elapsed during the breathing episode.

Is the machine set for a default setting? I.e. if it detects no breathing for 10 seconds it kicks in the higher pressure?

Dave,

You need to supply just a little more information before a good answer is possible.
1. Can you identify the model of Respironics you are using? To get the model, take out the humidifier tank and then turn the machine over and look on the bottom of the blower unit. There you will see a model number that looks like DSnnn or REFnnn where the nnn is the model number.
2. Do you have a copy of your sleep study for reference. In it will be comments on whether or not you had central apneas.
3. If your machine is not a model 950 or 960 or one of the BiPap S/T models (can't think of the proper model numbers for them) AND you are having central apneas, the machine won't respond no matter how long you are not breathing.
Before I got my 960 BiPap ASV machine, I would occasionally have central apneas that lasted a lone time. The longest I actually measured was 1 minute 45 seconds and during that time, my machine just waited quietly for me to resume breathing.
4. If you don't have the software to read out your therapy results, you should get either SleepyHead vers 9.6 or Encore. They will be able to show you what your therapy looks like providing your model number 450 or larger. The models with lower numbers ("bricks") only report hours of use and that won't be helpful in the circumstances you describe.

5. If you have one of the lower numbered models ("bricks") then it would be helpful to obtain a recording pulse oximeter. Even with a brick, an oximeter will be able to show you desaturation events.

Hi,

I’m using the Respironics PR one (ASV machine).

Here are the model numbers:

REF 960P
DS6HFLG

Yep I do have central apneas and they were detected on my sleep study which I have. I also have sleepyhead software but I'm not sure what I'm suppose to be looking for besides the AHI number? I believe I have been having mini central apneas but they are too short to be detected by the machine hence me gasping for air despite having an ASV machine.

Any help is appreciated!

Now that we know which machine you have, we also need to know which mask you have, and all of your pressure settings.

Then if you could post your graphs the smarter folks here can tell you more about what is happening and recomend some changes. You can than discuss with your sleep doctor or decide to take charge yourself. No one here can or will provide medical advice.

OK to get to the right group, add ASV to your subject line.

Do you have the correct software to get your data?

Next, what is your backup breathing rate? If it some value like 8 or so, can you change it to Auto?
Auto should help with the long pauses that wake you up.

Can you post your equipment? I have a link on doing that in my signature block.
What does your prescription say about the machine settings?
That will also be helpful.

Just checked my clinician manual and the back up rate could be set as low as 4 breaths per minute.
If that is your case, that could account for what you feel.
