Newbie Needs Help!

Post by vertebra » Wed May 17, 2006 9:45 pm

Hello,
Thank you in advance for any replies. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I need a pressure setting of 13. My insurance company did not cover durable goods so I was forced to buy a machine on my own. I picked up a HC234JHU made by Fisher and Paykel off of a Yahoo auction. Since I was not dealing with a respiratory therapy company I had to drop off my machine to the testing center to have it calibrated. I read the instructions I hit power then ramp. The pressure gradually increases. I fall asleep only to find that my stomach is full of air only after 1 hour. I am using the same mask that I was fine with during the test. Any suggestions of what I am doing wrong? I made another apt w/the Dr. but it's not for another week and I am dying to get some sleep.

Thank You,
Mark

the condition is called aerophagia or the swallowing of air. An autopap is the best machine for it as it results in the lowest of pressures. You also need to address any acid reflux.

sometimes a damaged lower esophagaus spincter valve (LES) can be the cause, it gets damaged from years of acid reflux and then it leaks. Your doctor may have to prescribe Prevacid or other acid pump inhibitor to lessen the stomach acid so your LES can heal which can take 6 weeks or more.

elevating the head of your bed by 8-10" will help.
