Nasal Mask Causing Jaw Bone Loss??

Post by Speonk202 » Wed Mar 21, 2012 1:39 pm

Has anyone ever heard of the nasal mask's causing jaw bone loss in the upper front teeth? Under the nose where the mask sits?
Thank you,
JohnB

"Not I", (said the little green frog.)
But I did get some upper incisor pain from a poorly fit Resmed Mirage Micro.
I quit wearing it--who wants to take chances?
Jaw bone loss is more commonly observed as a side effect of some anti-osteoporosis drugs.

I've read those articles recently, you may be interested, although both of them focuses on facial bones problems during CPAP use in children.

I can't speak to bone loss - but I have braces and asked my orthodontist if using a CPAP mask would mess up my teeth since it sits right above the top teeth. He said not to worry. Of course, I am 50 years old so my face is most likely done growing!

I used nose pillows for about a year and noticed dryness in my nose along that caused a cracking of the skin membrane inside and a crack on the nose entry. The cracks kept healing and returning with also bleeding. They had an odor like they were infected. I have also noticed that I am missing one of the small bones that form the nose tip. I started applying a triple antibiotic that seems to help.
I decided to search another method to maintain my air passage. Now I am using those mouth pieces that you mold around your teeth that push the lower jaw forward 1/4 inch that helps keep the air passage open even when I am on my back.
I feel that CPAP machines are a filthy treatment plan for sleep apnea. Even though I throughly wash the nose pillows, cleanse the humidifier and wash the hose, there is still bacteria growth. I guarantee if the machine is swabbed and a bacteria count is done in the lab we would all be very surprised. I have a nursse friend who is not very hygenic.
She never cleans her CPAP machine. I can't imagine the bacteria count on her machine...................

Just a reminder that you're going to lose bone all over as you age unless you take specific meds or supplements to stop it from happening, and you'll lose more if you have osteoporosis.

Excess bone loss can also be caused by cancer;
but if you are getting frequent sores, maybe your doctor should be contacted.
Any number of ugly things could be causing your symptoms, but cpap is very unlikely.

I agree with the frog (now there's something I never thought I'd say in my life...)
