cpap mask for claustrophic people

Post by debsgurl » Fri May 22, 2009 10:46 pm

Does anyone know of a company that makes masks for CPAP which cover ONLY nose and mouth? I am very claustrophic and cannot bear anything on my forehead. I found one but "it's not on our formulary" so my Medicare and insurance will not pay for it.

There are many masks that fit that description. Check https://www.cpap.com and search the Masks (link on the left side of the page) to see what's available. There are other designs available on the 'net, too, like the CPAP-PRO mask, which has no headgear at all; it's a boil-n-bite mouthplate with nasal pillows. http://www.nomask.com/

Happy shopping.

I was going to mention the CPAP Pro mask (which cpap.com carries), but another poster beat me to it. It has absolutely no straps and uses nasal pillows to deliver CPAP. You keep it in place by means of a boil-n-bite mouthpiece.

I use it and like it, but it is not recommended for folks with TMJ problems, partial plates, or dentures. However, that being said, I do have TMJ and had my dentist make me a custom bite plate. If you mouth breath a lot, it may not work for you either. I had to train myself to keep my tongue on the roof of my mouth to minimize leaks. YMMV.

The Probasics ZZZ-Mask is one that works well for me, but there are others available. Every mask takes some getting used to, and this one is no exception.

What mask are you currently using? I don't like anything touching my forehead, either......so.....I wear the top straps on my UMFF and Quattro VERY loose. Any tension to hold them to my face is on the lower straps. I set the forehead support in the most upright position and with this arrangement, the forehead piece rarely touches my forehead.

Claustrophobia? That's all in your head.....
