What type of mask should I buy in the CPAP machine?

Post by AndreasRoberts » Mon Apr 25, 2022 8:36 am

My grandfather is also old this year. His breathing is very poor. So I want to buy you a CPAP machine. But I don't know whether to buy a nose-mouth mask, a nose mask, or a cannula type. Can anyone who has experience with it give me an opinion?

You don't buy a CPAP machine to solve his breathing problem...you see a doctor who will order a sleep study to see if a CPAP will help him.

I agree with LSAT. It is important to know what kind of breathing problem your grandfather has. If he has sleep apnea, then a CPAP machine will make sense; if he has some other problem, it won't.

But to answer your question: if your grandfather breathes through his nose during the day, he can try a nose-only mask. There are two kinds: pillow masks, with separate pieces that fit into each nostril, or nasal masks, which deliver the air to both sides of the nose at the same time.

If he breathes through his mouth, he will need a full-face mask, which delivers air to the nose and mouth at the same time.

Cannulas don't work with CPAP machines, because they don't allow the air in the airway to be pressurized.

Finding the right mask can be a challenge. People often need to try several, and work hard on getting the mask to fit right. Do you think your grandfather will be willing to try this?

You are a good grandson, and your grandfather is lucky you care so much for him.
