Is a ResMed branded SD card really necessary?
Is a ResMed branded SD card really necessary?
I made my annual (basically unnecessary) visit to my sleep doc yesterday, pretty much just to keep my relationship active in case I needed a prescription, etc. I've always found his RT needlessly cranky and she's never liked me because I'm a little more independent than their average patient. Last time I was in I brought along my SD card from my PRS1 Bi-Level machine that I was using at the time. It ticked her off that I hadn't brought in my actual machine but I assured her she didn't need it. This trip I had been using my ResMed AS10 for the last year so I brought in my SanDisk SD card which was formatted from new on that specific machine. After a while she cheerily appeared to inform me that ResScan on their computer would only accept and read SD cards that were genuine ResMed branded so my SanDisk card was useless to them. (It works fine in SH on my computer.) Had I bothered to bring in my machine she could have downloaded the data she needed from that.
I always thought SD media was the same across brands and figured she was just giving me a hard time. Before I contact the practice manager I thought I'd better ask all of you first: is she full of hooey or is there truth in her assertions?

I have used a ResMed branded SD card on a Respironics machine and read data off it just fine. An SD card is an SD card. She is full of poop.

This has come up on the forum before.
I got curious.
I peeled the Resmed label off the "resmed" sd card.
Underneath was a Memorex label.
Somebody is full of something stinky.

Both of our machines have FlashAir cards in them. The sleep clinic has never said anything about them. I use these cards because I am too lazy to move the cards from the machines to the computer and back again when I want to check how we are doing with our treatment.

This is what is technically known as a lie.old dude wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2019 6:51 pmI made my annual (basically unnecessary) visit to my sleep doc yesterday, pretty much just to keep my relationship active in case I needed a prescription, etc. I've always found his RT needlessly cranky and she's never liked me because I'm a little more independent than their average patient. The only question is, is it a lie out of ignorance, incompetence, or malice?

Re: Is a ResMed branded SD card really necessary?
I don’t know anything about the Clinician ResScan reader.
If she tried to put your SD card into another ResMed Air* machine though, it would have wiped the data right after it was inserted. They apparently check for a machine id file, and if it doesn’t match, they erase everything and start from scratch. My fiancée tried it with two otherwise-identical machines.
The bitchy tech might have even done that on purpose ....

Cpap makers do NOT make their own sd cards.
They just relabel off the shelf cards, and jack up the price.

Re: Is a ResMed branded SD card really necessary?
I'm going with all three.
The fact that she believed it to be true, suggests ignorance.
The fact that she wouldn't even try, suggests malice.
The fact that she let a patient leave without providing care, that could have been provided, demonstrates incompetence.

Re: Is a ResMed branded SD card really necessary?
Yup. I think there are two reasons a manufacturer says you have to use their SD cards:raisedfist wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2019 7:52 pmI have used a ResMed branded SD card on a Respironics machine and read data off it just fine. An SD card is an SD card. She is full of poop.
1) They take a generic card that meets their specifications and mark it up, I don't know 10 times. They want to make as much money as they can.
2) They want to be sure the card meets their technical specifications. which mostly pivots around the reading/writing speed of the card.
In my experience, buy a good quality card and you'll never have trouble. CPAP machines aren't storing 4K video or anything that needs high speed access. I would think any reputable SD card would work well. While the cards off wish.com might work, get something of a known quality and be done.
I agree that it appears based on what you said that the lady in the office was neither professional nor knowledgeable.

She just wants to sell her a card with a ResMed label on it at an inflated price.
