Airfit n10 nasal mask vs. Mirage FX mask. Which is better?

Post by Physician » Mon Jun 09, 2014 8:19 pm

I've been using the Mirage FX nasal mask and six month average leak rate has been 12 and AHI = 0.1 . Has anyone here compared this Mirage FX to the Airfit n10 nasal mask ?

Newer masks are not always better. ResMed produced a Swift FX Nano mask and it suffered from at least four problems.

If so, what are the similarities and differences of each, and which do you recommend ?

Before switching to FFM I used the Mirage FX and it worked really well for me. I ordered the Airfit N10 and returned it because I couldn't control the leaks and my AHI went up. So, like any mask no can tell you 'which is better'. It's so individual. I haven't seen many reviews about the Mirage FX on this forum but I like it.

Thank you. From all the information here and on the Net, the Airfit does not look promising. I'll try one in the next 48 hours and report back here.

Airfit n10 nasal mask was NOT GOOD.

Post by Physician » Tue Jun 10, 2014 4:39 pm

Tried the ResMed Airfit n10 nasal mask. I use a standard Mirage FX nasal mask, and thus tried a standard size ResMed Airfit. It fit comfortably around my nose.

THE AIRFIT NASAL MASK WAS A FAILURE. The inner membrane was too long/broad, insufficiently curved downward, and too pliable, so every time I inhaled, the membrane would completely occlude my nares. I could not breathe in. This is a design flaw or a defective mask. A larger size would not have changed this defect. With the standard Mirage I'm currently using, the inner membrane could never occlude the nostrils. I didn't bother checking the air vents or noise level on the Airfit, since being able to breathe in is a priority and not being able to breathe is a complete deal-breaker.

Will remain with the Mirage FX nasal mask. It is fine. The only complaint about the Mirage is that the vent holes inferiorly blow exhaust on my hands when in the lateral decubitus position, so the bed sheet or blanket must be placed over my hands. My partner enjoys any exhaust sound from the machine and mask. It's like "white noise" and it helps her sleep.

Some people would also reject this Airfit because of beliefs and superstitions about having two strong magnets on each side of the face for an extended time period. Will research any beneficial or adverse effects of those magnets.

Will try the larger size next week and make further comments.

Have you tried the Wisp nasal mask. It is also a very good nasal mask, doesn't have the forehead piece.. I used that one also for a while, alternated with the MIrage FX.

Why do you trade off ? What criticisms of the Mirage do you have ?

The forehead piece of the Mirage is not obstructive and presents no problem. I haven't tried the WISP, but will next week just for fun. So far, no reason to change from the Mirage FX nasal mask.

I have no criticisms of the Mirage. I just thought you were looking for a new nasal mask and thought I would suggest it.

As for the forehead piece on the Mirage I agree that it is a non-issue. I usually cannot stand anything on my forehead for long (no hats, no visors, etc), yet I could sleep with the Mirage all night with no problem whatsoever.

I just returned the Airfit yesterday. It was the ONLY mask my DME would sell me on Friday (must be getting a really good incentive from ResMed or something). It leaked big time along the top of my nose and was really noisy as well. So, back to the Mirage FX until I can scrounge up the cash to try the Wisp - the DME does not allow more than one exchange and I didn't want to take the risk of the Wisp not working out.

ResMed must not be doing proper pre-sales/developmental testing on a sufficient and appropriate population. The Swift nasal mask also had problems which could have been eliminated by proper "beta testing".

Why do you want to change from the Mirage to the Wisp ? Have you used the Wisp before ?

Just want to try something other than the FX. It works okay, but sometimes leaks when the ASV jumps up in pressure.

Understandable. In the next 10 days will report back on the Wisp, alternate sizes of the Mirage FX nasal, and a second attempt of the poorly designed Airfit n10.

I don't like nasal pillows because above a pressure of nine, the audible turbulence is annoying and inhibits sleep.

Any other nasal masks I should sample ?

Other than the WISP and a larger size Airfit N, are there any other masks which should be sampled ? So far, the Mirage FX and Respironics Comfort Classic and been my favs.

Suggestions please.

I started using the AirFit N10 with standard nose piece about 1 month ago. The first 3 days were not great. Now my leak rate is higher than the quattro fx. But my AHI'S are less than 0.5 consistently.I feel very good and sleep very well. To help keep my mouth shut I use a chin strap. For leaks I am using Rm Zzz's to help prevent leaks. Not so sure they are really helping.
My pressure is from 12.6 to 20. Very seldom goes over 13.5.

The great part of this is no marks on my face in the morning and I got a smaller mask to work for me finally.
I like the mask.
