Sore throat help

Post by bluetowelboy » Mon Jul 01, 2013 2:11 pm

I have been using the resmed s9 autoset with the humidifier for a week and a half now. I use a full face mask because I mouth breathe when I sleep. For the past 5 days I have been geting a tickle in my throat that leads me to have a coughing fit 2 to 3 times a night. This has not happened to me before cpap and I was fine for the first 2 or 3 days of therapy. I have increased the humidifier each day up until the max but it hasn't seemed to help.

Would a nasal mask with a chin strap be less likely to cause a sore throat? Could I maybe tape my mouth while wearing the full face mask to see if the nasal breathing would help or is that dangerous? Any ideas on a fix?

Thanks

try a chin strap with the mask you have now and see if it helps. Some people run a strap from one lower strap to the other under the chin.
If that doesn't help then the idea of nasal mask and chin strap won't work either.

Play with your humidity too. Try nasal rinses to help you breath easier through your nose. Also make sure you aren't getting acid reflux while you sleep.

If its set to highest humidity, it could easily disappear that quick.

Oh to be able to sleep for 8 hours on a machine, that would heaven!

bluetowelboy, does your sore throat last all day or does it get better after you get up in the morning? I don't use a full face mask but my understanding is that if you mouth breathe a lot even a full face mask won't prevent your mouth and throat from getting irritated and parched. I was thinking if your sore throat goes away after you get up and drink some water, it's probably dryness. I've read that the humidification our machines provide can keep our nasal passages from drying out while we sleep but can't compensate for the drying effects of mouth breathing, even with the FF mask.

My setting is one below the highest and it takes less than half the container. So one number higher is really shocking that it depletes the whole container.

I've had to take 2 approaches to the situation. First, I really have to crank the humidity year-round. Second, on days when the air is particularly dry, or I feel dry, I gargle with warm salt water before bed.

1. Practice with the machine during the day. In bed specifically breathing slower and gentler adding a pause between the end of exhale and inhale. Slow the breathing down. Then while using minor distraction such as quiet music or light TV.
2. When you go to bed continue the practice you started during the day as you fall asleep
3. Do what you can to reduce stress in your life.
4. Practice any all of Yoga, Qi Gong, most any kind of meditation.
