ResMed S9 Filter schedule

Understanding that YMMV, I am curious how often do you S9 users change your filters?

I'm fairly new to this. I went more than 2 months without thinking about it. I changed it last night and the one I pulled out was yucky. Not super-horrible but with a dog and two cats, might have changed sooner.

Two to four weeks is pretty much my fine filter changing routine with either the S9 or the PR S1.
Normally I take a quick look at 2 weeks and if it isn't too yucky looking I can wait another couple of weeks but rarely go past 4 weeks.
It kinda depends on what all I have going on here. I live in a tiny and very old farmhouse ...out in the country and if the weather is dry and we have more dust in the air...it gets yucky faster. Plus I do have dogs and a cat.
So not the greatest of environments to start with.
Dusty old house and out in the country where there's even more dust and I have pets...but I suspect that even without the pets the filters would get pretty yucky.

The ResMed S9 manual says replace the filter every 6 months...more often if necessary. Just inspect the filter monthly and if it's dirty replace it.

Kind of like changing the oil in your car. The manufacturer recommends every 7500 miles...most people do it sooner.

How frequently you change your filters will depend on how they look after a few weeks of use.

I used my first one a little over two months - I just take it out and flick any dust off it weekly. It was still white when I replaced it and most likely didn't really need to.

ResMed says 6 months or more often if needed.

Realize that as an air filter gets dirty, it actually filters out more dust, since the fine dust particles act like filters themselves. The problem is that the pressure drop gets higher and higher. The CPAP machine will compensate, but the motor has to work harder and it will eventually start to overheat, or it will not be able to blow all the air you need.

The filter is more for protecting the machine than protecting you, anyway. The air going through the CPAP is the same air you breathe all day long.

However, there is the yuck factor.

Respironics PRS1 says wash the grey foam filter every 2 weeks, replace every 6 months. White PRS1 filters should be replaced monthly.

Archangle has a good point. I change mine (bi-weekly) BEFORE the "yuck-factor" kicks in. I can't tell the difference between the old filter and the new one... both still white and no difference in the color. But... that's just me. I shopped around and found cpapfiltersandsupplies.com. They sell a 5 pack of filters for $5.81 and a 50 pack for $51.60... pretty good deal.

Hello S9 users - Mom uses a Cpap - she and dad had it all figured out. Dad passed away and now we kids are trying to make sense of all this. Mom had only ever changed the hose and face mask - never talked about a filter, so I see them in the box (but the manual we have for the Resmed is very basic and says nothing about the filters. How do I change the filter? (Filter change 101 needed here.) Many thanks -

I'm also reading some on the site about the humidifier - how do I know if she has a humidifier or not? In the ResMed S9 is it part of the one machine? Or is it a separate unit? Mom's having trouble with "knocking" sound and I'm reading that it may relate to humidifier level. Any help greatly appreciated!

The humidifier is a separate box that hooks to the blower unit. It has an oval-shaped window in the top.
The top opens up and the tank inside needs fresh distilled water. Removing to fill is safer.

The DME said check it every couple weeks but change it every 2 mo.

I change the S9 hypo-allergenic filter every two weeks. My asthma is well controlled, thanks to that filter. But if I let the filter go much over two weeks, the asthma is back at night, regardless of how the filter "looks."

Medicare authorize 2 white filters every month and 1 black foam filter every 3 months. So I change the white 1 every other week and wash the black one every other week.
