Help! Is there a Insomnia Forum as good as CPAPtalk is?

Post by Sir NoddinOff » Thu Apr 18, 2013 12:19 pm

HELP ---- My sister has cancer plus advanced dementia and is soon going to pass away. I'm on pins and needles day and night since we were very close before her advanced Alzheimer's took control. Therefore, I'm going thru some very rough patches of insomnia.

One doctor is saying ride it out, another recommending pills, another sez cognitive behavior modification... plus my old GP simply said take a yoga class. Who'd ever guess everybody's got a different opinion. I've always been a difficult sleeper but this round of sleeplessness is driving me insane. SOOOOOO... Please let me know of any insomnia websites with experienced and dedicated members who are as caring and wonderful as CPAPtalk is. I want talk to the Pugsy of insomnia, if there is one

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Have you tried low dose (1-2 mg) Melatonin? It's relatively safer than narcotic or other sleep meds. Have you tried Googling 'insomnia forums'?

Very sorry about your sister, must be very hard for you.

Hi SNO,

I am sorry to hear about your sister and that you are having trouble sleeping. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through.

I never joined but I lurked on this forum. They seem caring but of course, I never interacted with anyone so I could have missed something.

Hey SNO, another one to check out. I'm not sure how active it is as the last post was in March (compare that to our daily smokin' message board) but maybe there are some gems to find there?

http://www.talkaboutsleep.com/message-b ... um.php?f=5

As for finding another Pugsy -- no, there's only one Pugsy and she's ours. The bar has been set...

I'm sorry about your sister and what you and all her loved ones are going through. Pop in here for some extra support, just because...

I was on Chat last night with another forum member who is a long-time yoga practitioner and we were discussing yoga for insomnia. I think she has already spotted your thread so if you're interested, post again and I'm sure she'll respond.

The most effective approach will likely involve more than one modality. Best wishes SNO, keep us posted.

I did a Google search on Home remedies for Insomnia Yesterday and Found this. Two table spoons of Raw Honey and One Teas spoon of Cinnamon before Bed. I tried it and slept thru the Night with only One Minor arousal. My AHI was 1.1 and Leaks were @ 15 But I contribute the leaks to when I first Masked up and was adjusting the Mask. Also Raw Honey and Cinnamon have Numerous other Health factors too Numerous to mention but a simple Google will enlighten you. I Intend to continue the Raw Honey and Cinnamon.

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate them:

Julie: Yes I did try sub-lingual 3.5mg Melatonin but have had moderate success with it... for me, it only seems to work before bedtime and often it doesn't work at all. I put it down to my nervous temperament

49er and kaiasgram: Thanks for those links... I will definitely check 'em out. Both look interesting and I'm still looking for the Pugsy of Insomnia kaiasgram: I kind of consider my bike riding to be yoga but once I hit a calm patch emotionally, I might check out yoga. God knows I need a good stretching! Thanks so much for the support and info about your friend! I know nothing about yoga.

DannyPh: I LOVE cinnamon... I've got to try that, so simple too. BTW, I also bought a spray bottle of Magnesium oil today to spray on my stomach before bedtime. It's supposed to be the same as grannie's old Epsom Salt baths to help her relax and prepare for sleep, only more convenient.

Sorry, too sleepy to write much more...

Talk to you all later. SNO

Dear Sir, It's clear we must clone Pugsy for use in various areas of need ( president comes to mind off the top of my head). I'm a biologist and am willing to give it a go.

When it comes to grieving / mourning / preparing for a significant loss - this is way way different than the disorder insomnia. The sleeplessness that comes with this is not a disorder, it's normal - as hard as it is to deal with. It may be six months to a year before sleep patterns turn back to normal. . .along with all the other physical responses of going through what you are going through.

A good support group is a life saver - but a group for loss would be much more beneficial and help you get back to you after your sister's passing with at least some foresight and some preparation of what your body, heart and mind will go through. I hate to be the one to squash this . . .but it's so very different. A good insomnia group will not help you here.

I am so sorry for your going through this with your sister. I'm glad she has you. If you would like to talk more, please PM me, and I'll be glad to share / support.

That's a really great forum you suggested, Mushroom. I just looked at the thread index and there's a lot of info available... alas, for members only, so I'll sign up as a new newbie tonight.

Kaiasgram, I really like the one you suggested: talkaboutsleep.com. Seems like a lot of good down to earth info... plus they let you lurk without joining, which I like.

Every late fall the memory of being robbed, stabbed and beaten cause major upset in my CPAP therapy. It is, indeed, a CO2 maintenance issue cause by stress!!!

Talk with your doctors about [1,2].

Best wishes your way -

Todzo

Thanks Todzo, Avi123, quietmorning, johnthomasmacdonald, mushroom, DannyPh, kaiasgram, plus all the others for the great ideas, websites, homeopathic cures and support. I'm too tired to respond to each post individually, but just know that your good wishes and advice are very much appreciated in these stressful times.

BTW,I bought a bottle of magnesium oil, tried it and it does seem to help me relax. I remember my gramma used to take epsom salt soaks in the tub, ie. magnesium salts .

Peace.
