To our Aussie CPAPers...

Post by CPAPhope » Sat Jan 26, 2013 12:33 pm

I just noticed on my calendar that today (It's January 26 where I am) is Australia Day. How do you recognize this day? Is it like our 4th of July?
Anyway, I just wanted to say have a happy one!

Does this celebrate the first ship load of convicts? Australia was turned into Britain's Prison when it lost its Old Prison - the United States of America after the revolution

It is Australia's "National Day" and falls in the Southern Hemisphere summer, but is otherwise not much like the 4th of July.

It marks the day in 1788 that, early in the morning, Capitan Arthur Phillip RN, along with a few dozen marines, officers and oarsmen, rowed ashore in Sydney Cove and took possession of the land in the name of King George III.

Australia Day generally marks the end of the summer holiday period in Australia, and the return to business as usual. Soon after Australia Day, children return to school from their long summer vacation, the city roads jam up and life goes on!

Cheers,

Bill

As the London tour guide said when we were on a sight seeing tour and passed by a statue, "King George the third, the last king of America!"

We spent the day recovering from 28 inches (700mm+) of rain, The Bundaberg QLD area looks like a disaster, not only did we have the rain we also got devestated by the 6 mini tornados in 24 hours that did a considerable amount of damage

Parts of Bundaberg are flooded & declared a disaster area, we are cut off by road, no electricity & will have to wait for air lifts, Im lucky in the fact I have Solar with battery backup

I dont know how Sleepyhead Mark has faired but hope all is well with him

So folks that is how we spent Australia Day 2013, Happy Australia Day!!! )

Yowch.. Sorry to here you had a crummier time than me with this flood. I hope your house at least managed to keep it's floorboards dry..
Please PM me if you need help cleaning up.

I'm in Millbank, and we stayed quite dry.. Bourbong street got cut off at the bridge not far from us. A few houses went under there.

PS. Did you end up getting that chopper ride

Usually on Australia day, we stick our flag on cars/tshirts/faces/whatever, BBQ stuff (and it's prawns, not shrimp), drink some good(? ) Aussie beer (or Bundy Rum & coke), crank up some AC/DC or Cold Chisel real loud and do as little as possible.

So apart from the overabundance of Aussie flags, it's pretty much a normal day for us.

Not much of that happened this year over my side of the country. It was hard to cook a good steak under water.
