CoQ10 and Central Apneas

Post by 70sSanO » Mon Dec 31, 2012 3:49 pm

So I month or so a go my wife asks me if I'll take these giant soft gels called CoQ10. She took them when she was having palpitations and continued after she had an ablation done. She said they would be good for my heart.

I do have hypertension and take Atacand, I also take a statin for cholesterol.

So I agree and this big Kirland bottle appears on my side of the vanity.

Since I got a data machine in March 2011, my Central Apneas average 3.0 to 3.5 per hour. AHI has always been over 5.0... typically 5.5 (Except for a time when I did some extreme self titration).

However, during the past month (December), my central average is 1.9. In November it was 2.7, and in October; 3.1. My Obstructive numbers over the same period run a pretty steady 1.1 - 1.2.

I take it at night with the other meds and a 81mg aspirin.

I'll have to keep on the numbers for a year to see if they spike back up with the change in weather, work, etc.

Just thought I would pass it along.

costco has a pineapple flavored liquid CoQ10 which is supposedly absorbed better and is really quite yummy

And sometimes there are trace additives in meds (inactive as far as the medication goes) that can interact with particular people's chemistry... check the small print (or "Inactive (or Inert) Ingredients) and see if anything looks familiar.

Before using CoQ10, I suggest reading the following: http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/hear ... c-overview

Searching the Internet, I found several reputable sources that had similar warnings. In the field of prostate cancer, there are some [unregulated] dietary supplements that make curative claims. In some cases, they actually make the cancer worse or hide its effects for a while, making you think you are cured. Many decades ago, we used to be warned about snake oil salesmen. Today, we must do our own research.

Hmmm, my doctor suggested CoQ10 because of the Lipitor.
I take 200 mg in the morning, but no insomnia--I bob off within 5 minutes of masking up.

I'm not worried about CoQ10 side-effects. My wife and I have been seeing an Internal Medicine doctor for over a dozen years. He suggested she take the CoQ10 and also recommended the surgeon for her procedure.

As for me, he was the one who suggested I do a sleep test in 2001. Probably saved my life.

My observation has to do with any connection between the CoQ10 and fewer Central Apneas.

I found your observations to be quite interesting and have done a little research. you may find the following article of interest regarding statins, apnea, and coq10 by a former flight surgeon
