Suddenly: Aerophagia

Post by DiverCTHunter » Tue Aug 21, 2012 9:26 am

So I haven't made any changes to my settings, mask, headgear, or pillows for the last month, but suddenly I'm having at least 1 full awakening around 3a-4a from mild aerophagia. A few hearty belches (that show up as VS2 clusters) and I'm back to sleep. This has been going on for about a week now and is definitely getting annoying.

I did a quick search, but didn't see any recent threads about this. Is this just a random phase everyone goes through, or should I start looking for culprits?

My Sleepyhead graphs all look relatively normal, 95% pressure has been at 11.0 for the last 4 weeks. I'll post the pics when I get off work. I did notice an uptick in VS2 clusters, not sure if they're relevant or not since they're usually around the start and end of sessions & I don't keep a diary.

Prescribed APAP range - 6-10 cm/H2O, titrated at 8.
Current range - 9.0-11.5 cm/H2O - still searching for the magic "zero night" but averaging 2.2 AHI

Sorry for the long turnaround time, had to haul another couple boxes of junk out of the storage unit. Going to try to get this to upload before my laptop runs out of juice, then it's lights out.

Still wracking my brain for any relevant changes, but here are a few possibilities:
  • Environment - I moved the hose hanger closer to the side of the bed, but that wouldn't affect my positioning since the tech who did my sleep studies said I was the most active sleeper she'd ever seen.
  • Environment - Windows have been open the last 3 nights since it finally started cooling down here in "da souf". Water usage has dropped from 1 tank/night to 1/2 tank/night.
  • Exercise - Slight increase in cardio - trying to get on the stationary bike at least three times a week - so far only been making it once a week.
  • Diet - I've been cutting down on carbs & fat lately. Fiber intake unchanged. Breakfast is oatmeal, lunch is either a protein shake or a roast-beef wrap. Dinner is random.
  • Diet - Trying to get my straight water intake back up to at least 1l/day. 1-2 cups of coffee in the morning, 1-2 20 oz. diet sodas in the early afternoon (for the record, this is WAY down from 3 months ago.)
Here's the overview for the last week and the detailed for last night - looks like I DID get up to 11.5 a few times. Ignore the data after my 1st alarm went off at 6:30 and I'll try and get tonight and night before last posted in the morning.

Well, after posting last week, the problem mysteriously went away only to come back last night.

I haven't had a chance to dump my SD card yet, but one of the arousals I remember was one of the nasal pillows having been smooshed shut while the other one was leaking. When I washed my mask this morning it was coated in oil and took twice as long as normal to clean.

The moral of this story is remember to clean your face along with your mask
