Humidity setting

Post by jenn1270 » Sat Feb 25, 2012 11:54 am

How do you know when you have the perfect level of humidity?

On my PR1 I have kept it on 1 but didn't know if more would be better. My mouth is sometimes a bit dried out in the morning, but my nose is always ok. I have found my nose is very very greasy in the morning and I am starting to get some blackheads and pimples. I've gotten my mask fitting perfectly and my AHI is always around 1-2.

Experiment. Crank it up one unit each night and see what it does for you. Humidifiers are considered a comfort feature. You really don't need a humidifier, but so many people find humidification to be desirable, the insurance companies pay for that feature. I've run my machine without humidity, and on high. I settled on an intermediate setting. That seems to work best for me. But other than experimenting, there's no way to determine the "perfect" setting.

Humidity is always a big variable. Depending on the seasons where you live, your home heating, having April Aire unit/humidity control on the furnace, the mask type. heated or non-heated hose and of course your machines humidifier the setting can change a lot. I have found for me at least that if I can get it so my mouth isn't drying out with my Full Face Mask or that I am not getting nose bleeds due to dried out sinuses with the Nasal pillows I am happy. During the summer, I tend to lower my humidity to about half that of winter where I tend to have to max out my humidity settings, with spring and fall being almost set to off. I live in Wisconsin USA and the winters get cold and seem to suck the moisture out of the air while the spring and fall season tend to be very wet. Sometimes in winter I have to run a separate home humidifier.

So I would say play it by feel and change the setting only a little each night until comfortable and adjust as needed.

On the black heads and pimple thing. Masks over time build up oils on them there are many products to clean them but I have found that taking the mask apart and soaking them in 50/50 water & white vinegar for about 30 minutes works the best. Then give them a good wipe and rinse well to restore the "stickiness" of the silicon membrane once it dries off and to take care of any vinegar smell. It is always a good idea to clean your face off ether just before bed or if that tends to wake you up maybe an hour or 2 before going to bed. This should stop the oil build up or slow it down and help with the blackheads/pimples.
