Respironics ds 450 hs or Resmed S9 Elete???????

Post by crazynan » Fri Feb 24, 2012 9:19 am

I am so confussed. I do not know which cpap I should get. I have the Resmed s8 right now. I just watched a video saying that Respironics is quieter than the s9. Which machine is the better machine? Which is better to prevent rainout? Please help. Also, is it better to get auto?? My dme said my script was not written for that, but I see so many have it.

I personally don't believe an AUTO is better than a CPAP except in certain circumstances, not because "I see so many have it". If you don't have a compelling reason to get an AUTO and are happy with your CPAP stick with the presciption your doc has written. Ask for a data capable machine.
The new machines are all quiet, I don't think there is any real difference in the Respironics or ResMed. Rainout comes from having the humidity on your machine set too high or from needing a hose cover to keep the tubing warm.
Good luck, keep us posted.

For rain out control...get the S9 because it has the heated hose which offers an additional layer of help with rain out.
I have used both brands of machines...noise is minimal to none with either and nearly impossible to tell any difference with the human ear.
Some minor pros and cons with each machine that sort of balance each other out. Either one will give you great therapy.

We advocate APAPs because they are like 2 machines in one (APAP can be used in a straight CPAP mode) and sometimes we do better on APAP but not everyone does and not everyone likes the varying pressures of APAPs.. It is just nice to have the availability for APAP if needed.
Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it...type of thing. If someone happens to need some varying pressures because of super tough events in REM sleep or supine sleeping having varying pressures lets us use lower pressure most of the time with some increases as needed instead of having to use a higher pressure all the time. I happen to need more pressure for REM events. Sometimes to 18 cm instead of my normal 10 cm...Obviously much easier to use APAP 10 cm for most of the time and let the machine go to 18 only as needed instead of me using 18 cm all the time. Not everyone has such marked differences though.

DMEs can supply APAP if they would do it and honor the RX because all they need to do is set the machine in CPAP mode. They dig in their heels because they get paid most of the time by a set code and get the same payment with either and since the CPAP machine costs a bit less than an APAP machine...they make more money on the CPAP so guess which one they want to dispense.

I currently have a ResMed S9 machine and a PR S1 machine. The only real noise I hear is mask venting...and I would have that with any machine.
