Introduction + Does CA's indicate need for ASV?

Post by Snork » Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:23 pm

Hello all!

A short introduction; I'm new to CPAP, been using my Resmed S9 for a month now. I was diagnosed late December with 50 AHI unreated. Now, after a few weeks of trying 7-8 different masks, different pillow sizes, different climate control settings etc, I average about 4-5 AHI. I have settled on pillows, allowing me to keep my beard, while also being the most comfortable option (for me at least!). I still struggle a bit adjusting the pillows before I go to sleep, I guess I'm worried they will pop out during the night. I guess I will be more relaxed about the whole thing after some more time has passed and I get used to the whole CPAP thing.

Let me say that this forum has been a great help for me so far! There's a lot to learn here, and it's always good to hear other CPAP user's first hand experiences, not just what medical staff tells me. Also, the SleepyHead software (which I discovered through this forum) has been very interesting this first month, even though I don't understand half of what the numbers are saying... Also, I have picked up some useful tips like fastening the hose to the top of my head to stabilize the pillows. It's also comforting to know that I'm not alone!

I have a question for you knowledgeable people... I'm scheduled for a follow up session with my doctor in a couple of weeks, but in the mean time I'm curious about the Clear Airway apneas that keep popping up in SleepyHead. Does this mean that I'm a candidate for ASV? Aren't they supposed to not be there if treatment was 100%? Or does "everyone" have such instancies of CA's?

Please see attached picture for a summary of a typical night the last week. If more info is needed to answer my question, please tell me what!

Regards

We all probably have some centrals. You don't have enough to give them a second thought. Your AHI is great. Rarely does anyone achieve 0.0 AHI. The accepted goal here in the US is <5/hour. No you don't need an ASV yet.
