Initial sleepiness on CPAP
Initial sleepiness on CPAP
I've read bits and pieces about people who experience initial sleepiness on CPAP and I have it not two months into using my CPAP. I wish I could make it go away but so far I've slept what I thought was plenty and I'm still sleepy. Does anyone know what causes the sleepiness? Is there anything that helps to ameliorate it? I'm a 65 year old female in relative good physical shape. I swim for at least 40 minutes 4x a week and am getting back into hiking after Achilles surgery. I wasn't sleepy like this before CPAP. I would appreciate any thoughts.

It may be your body getting used to less adrenaline in your system.
I was hooked on my own stress hormones, and experienced a 'crash' at several weeks.
Weaning off my own adrenaline was weird, but it was much better once my body had adjusted.
Oddly, it seems like exercise helps--lucky for you.

Re: Initial sleepiness on CPAP
I don't know. When I first started xpap, I wanted a nap every day by 9am. So I took one. Anytime I was sleepy, I put on my mask and took a nap. It passed in about 2 weeks. I really think my brain was just learning that it was ok to sleep.

Re: Initial sleepiness on CPAP
You may have a sleep debt to repay plus your body is still adjusting to the machine. I know it's strange that the sleepiness should appear after you start CPAP when you didn't have it before. Are you monitoring your treatment by checking your AI and AHI?

Is CPAP disrupting your sleep?

Re: Initial sleepiness on CPAP
I don't think that CPAP is disrupting my sleep. I feel like I am sleeping well. From 55 apnea incidents per hour at my sleep study to .6 after being on the machine for a month I thought I was doing well. I guess I need to take the time to get my info on Sleepy Head or some software. Will I be able to understand what it is telling me?
