Average Total Leaks question

Post by Willis » Sat Feb 18, 2012 3:51 pm

I apologize before hand. This is my second week with cpap. I had many problems with mask leaks the first couple of days but as of the last couple of nights I think I got the leaks under control. This graph is a little off but hopefully you can advise of the numbers. From what I have read in this helpful forum the AHI numbers are good. Still baffled about the leak numbers. I don't think I can get the mask to not leak anymore than I have...so if the leak numbers are poor I will be looking for another mask. Thank You.

AHI 1.96 1.84 2.28 2.28 2.28

What software is giving you this data? Or are you getting the data off the machine's readout panel?

Data is likely from SleepyHead. Total Leak which is intentional vent rate plus any excess leak.
Intentional vent rate is going to be around 41 L/min.

The on screen data on the PR S1 machines is next to useless. It is only the % of time in Large Leak. That is all that is available on the LCD screen. We aren't ever told what number the "Large Leak" is but it seems to be somewhere between 80 and 90 L/min total leak. I usually just eyeball the leak line and if it stays under 80 L/min..then I am good. Leak lines are rarely flat and there will be some peaks and valleys. As long as the peaks to spend a large amount of time near that Large Leak area then I don't worry about the numbers.

Now any leak (even if small) that wakes a person up and disturbs sleep needs to be worked on due to messing with sleep more than anything else.

Yes. it's the SleepyHead software. Thank you for the info. I guess I'm dong everything correctly.

I probably should start a new discussion but I seem to wake up really groggie and overtired since starting this cpap stuff. Seems like a need a second cup of coffee most days. I'm thinking this is my body finally getting the rest it has needed for many years. I think I'm going to be one of the people that felt better after a month of cpap therapy. It sure is nice reading these old discussions about the successes of the cpap therapy and how they coped with it.

You are doing so much better than I was at 2 weeks...so try not to get discouraged.

Some things to think about....how many hours of sleep using the machine are you getting? Are you waking often during the hours you are using the machine? Fragmented sleep for any reason will mess with how we feel. Mask leaks if they are waking you up...work on them just for that reason if nothing else.

It does take some time to get used to all this stuff and those people who do seem to have an "overnight" miracle are really rather rare. Most of use takes weeks and months to start feeling better. Also we tend to put all our "I feel like crap eggs" in the OSA basket and tend to forget that there is more to feeling bad that comes from other things besides OSA and the cpap machine only tries to fix the OSA. It can't work miracles if we wake up 25 times a night or only get 5 hours of sleep or have a bad mattress or pain or whatever. The machine isn't designed to fix anything other than the OSA and if you have something else contributing to feeling less than optimal then you need to work on that problem separately.
