CPAP headache

Post by ernie85017 » Wed Feb 15, 2012 11:14 am

I have been on CPAP for a few weeks now. The last week or so I have started waking with a serious headache. It eases when I get up. The straps aren't too tight, as I don't seem to need much tightness for the nasal pillows.
Is this a common occurrence?

Mostly just the opposite.
My morning headaches disappeared day one.

Is it possible that the headache is from your neck and/or bed pillow? Sleeping position..

I used to have some killer morning headaches when I woke up prior to cpap therapy but those are pretty much gone. Often I wake up with a minor headache but I know it is from my neck...bad neck.

Your machine in your profile is showing the PR System One Plus CPAP....it offers zero data to see if your therapy is optimal. Suboptimal therapy could also be a factor in morning headaches. If your therapy is not effective for some reason then it might be a headache from oxygen levels dropping during the night.

You might want to bring the problem to the attention of your doctor. CPAP itself shouldn't cause headaches if you have eliminated the possibility of straps being too tight being a factor.

Wondering if maybe it's a humidifier problem. Does it seems like a sinus headache (behind your eyes?)

Did you have headaches prior to going on Cpap? When my AHI'S go over a certain amount I start waking up with a headache. If I keep my sleeping down to 7 to 8 hours each night. I sleep alot more sounder and less events and no headache. When I do have a headache one cup of coffee in the morning helps to reduce it .

Usually CPAP eliminate morning headache. Talk to your doctor It could from sinus congestion, most folk swear by sinus rinses (Neilmed sinus rinse bottle or Neti pot)

I was having some problem with my mouth opening during the night. I decided to use an Ace bandage and made a DIY chin strap. For the next 3 days I had a SEVERE headache. I eventually realized it was from the way my teeth were pushing against each other during the night because of the "chin strap". I stopped using it and the headaches disappeared. All of that was to say that it can be other issues with the straps even if they aren't too tight. Hope you can figure out what is causing your headaches.

Most of my CPAP-related headaches are because of straps that are too tight. This obviously isn't your problem, but just FYI, the elasticity of the headgear goes down over time, and you have to tighten it up to compensate. Because I start with the gear relatively tight -- I use a full face mask, have a beard, and can't find a mask that truly fits snugly -- this problem gets magnified and my headgear wears out in 4-5 months. I'm suffering through month 5 with frequent headaches, anxiously awaiting the date when my insurance will pay for a new mask.

Ernie and OutaSync, have you checked your oxygen levels? You might want to get a pulse-oximeter. Then your pulse-ox charts can be displayed in SleepyHead alongside the standard graphs. Just an idea. Typically, use of xpap helps, rather than hinders, blood oxygen.
