cant sleep without cpap

Post by level1dmc » Wed Feb 15, 2012 3:34 am

Let me first say that I'm a obese male. I started using my cpap 5 years ago when I was much lighter....I have been without my machine for two days now and haven't slept a wink. I fall asleep and continusly wake up gasping for air. I get my new machine in a few hrs. Has anyone else expirenced this.

It's quite common.

That's one reason it's good to acquire a backup machine, backup power source, spare mask, hose, etc.

Sometimes sleeping in a recliner, on your side, on your stomach, etc. might help.

No, I have not been without my machine since I started therapy (except when I was serving a warrant in a bar and lovely young lady popped me upside my head twice with a beer bottle... didn't wake up for two days... without a cpap... Why don't folks put their hands up when you tell them??? ). Out of fear of going a night without my machine, I got a back up.

I've found that after a month or so, my body started to see the CPAP as the cue for "time to go to sleep now." Since then, I've made sure I had a backup machine. It's an expense, for sure, but I found a very low-priced model with no data recording and saved up.

I'm an insomniac, so I feel your pain, I know that without the machine I'd be awake all night =(

Can your insurance company get you a "loaner" machine?

Three years into CPAP therapy, and I have not been able to sleep without my machine for at least two years, not even in my recliner - no naps, nothing without it. I started to doze in my recliner about a week ago, and within 3-5 minutes woke myself up from the snort of my first breath after an apnea. My partner was in his recliner, realized what had just happened and told me to either wake up or go to bed and put on my mask. I could keep my back-up machine in the den for such occasions, but.... not the accessory I want on display - not that I am ashamed of it, or that my friends don't know - it just is not attractive.
