sleep study

Post by coletteb » Thu Feb 09, 2012 9:48 pm

I had a sleep study done. The technician told me if there were episodes he would wake me during the night to put on the mask. Before we started he had me put on the mask so I would know what it was like in case he had to wake me during the night. He did not wake me all night. When I got the letter from my doctor he explains the results and stated I had 126 episodes and that my oxygen level had dropped to 60. Based on this I have to do another sleep study with the mask. The study is very costly so am not looking forward to another study for that reason. I do not know why the technician did not wake me during the first study. Has anyone else ran into things like this?

My technician didn't wake me up on my first sleep study either. My oxygen also dipped once to the sixties but my apnea count wasn't that high. I don't know the exact parameters warrant waking the patient up during the study and I'm sure it fluctuates between sleep technicians. good luck on your second sleep study. Curious, how did you feel when the doc tried the mask on you? I think it's encouraging that you were able to sleep all night on your first sleep study

Depends on the lab criteria that must be met before they do the split study with the machine. My sleep lab had a 15 events per hour and that was it. Didn't matter that my O2 went to low 70s. My main problem was REM sleep and I had such a delayed time into REM sleep (where I have 53 events per hour) that by the time I hit REM there wasn't enough time left to put the mask on and do a titration.

This is just my opinion.. but I wish I would have had a full nights sleep when they did my sleep study. I had the imfamous split study where I had over 45 events each of the first 3 hrs of my sleep study met their criteria for severe apnea and they woke me and put a nasal mask on me for the next 3 hrs and sent me home. Much as Pugsy descibes my worse events often occur after the 3 hrs of sleep mark. So they gave me a prescription for staight CPAP at 8cm. I've had to fight them to change my perscription twice to current pressure to 13cm. 3 visits to Sleep Dr. Data downloads a week with a APAP machine to try and figure out what was going on? I really think if they would have done a study like yours it would have been much better...IMHO

Best of Luck to you.

60 is frightening, but to some degree, they want to know how bad your apnea really is.

Presumably, you've been dropping to around 60 many times at home without CPAP already and haven't died yet.
