First get it checked out in ER!!! IMMEDIATELY!

Once you eliminate that, yes the work of exhaling against the pressure can make your chest muscles sore, just like your leg muscles get sore when you take a long hike up a mountain. However get all the other possibilities out of the way first.

While I do agree with BlackSpinner, I did want to note that I find I now breathe more deeply than I did when I was in my 30s. I am pretty certain that my lung function has actually increased and improved after all these years on xPAP therapy. It does take time to adjust to it. But it has definitely helped me reduce the number of times I developed bronchitis and chest colds. So, while it can literally be a pain for a while, it does help in the long run.

I might add that initially, I had aching in my chest wall (mostly sides) while getting used to deeper breathing.
But severe chest pain? ER ER ER! STAT!

I assume you are not having it right now or you wouldn't be on the computer typing. Severe chest pain is debilitating. When do you have it? Have you tried a liquid antacid in case it is caused by GERD? Severe acid reflux can mimic a heart attack. Before it happens again, call your doctor - don't wait until it is bad enough to go to the ER. That might be too late. I'm hoping it's nothing but take no chances.

Please see you doctor ASAP or go to the ER if it occurs again before seeing your doctor. Three weeks ago tomorrow I was admitted to the hospital with fresh blood clots to each lung, and had several older ones in each lung. I had little chest pain until Friday night, then it was IV morphine time. Please take care of yourself. Sandman19
