Belching & Farting... Im REALLY not trying to be gross

Post by Fykes » Sat Feb 04, 2012 8:08 am

Sorry to make something kinda gross my first post, but I was wondering if anybody else has noticed an increase in gas since they started with thier CPAP Therapy? I've noticed that every morning when I wake up I let out a TREMENDOUS belch (would have made college me VERY proud) and usually fart several times after I get up out of bed. This never happened until the last few months. Im wondering if I am swallowing air in my sleep and this is causing the Gas! if I'm not the only one, has anyone asked thier Doctor if this is harmful in any way? it only just seems annoying (we'll, I gotta be honest, My inner child LOVES IT! ), but I want to ask my doctor if it might become a problem. Thanks guys.

This experience is relatively common...search the term..."Aerophagia".

This happened to me after my first night on the CPAP. I've only been on it for four nights total. My doctor's office said this is a sign that the setting/pressure is too high. I'm hoping the doctor will lower my pressure.

Maybe, since yours just started after using the CPAP for a while, it means that your sleep apnea is getting some better and you need less pressure now? Just a thought.

Sometimes it happens when we are still getting used to our pressure.
With me, it went away after a few days.
Others have had it persist, having to sleep on their side, increase exhale pressure relief, or even switching to a Bipap machine.
Gas-X has been recommended, and it is a cheap thing to try.
Getting up, and walking around, or drinking water may also help.
If it still continues, nag your doctor about it; his input is needed to get you into a better machine, if you need one.
(--and even old ladies enjoy releasing a little "wind", in the right time and place.)

Invest in a really good muffler, not a glass pack, and maybe a catalic converter too. Jim

I've yet to start on CPAP therapy, but this is certainly an unexpected bonus!

My girlfriend will be thrilled!

I have always wished I had unique capabilities that would make me stand out in a crowd. Now that I can self levitate, I feel special.

All I can add is that both symptoms went away after about a month into my CPAP therapy. I don't know why it disappeared and I also understand that it doesn't go away for everybody, however I'm happy that it did. Try the OTC products for relief and tell your inner child to get a new hobby .

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I wouldn't be too quick to say "only" a guy! I appreciate a good fart as much as the next person. And I reckon I am not alone. Ladies?

LOL!!

Uh, while we're on the topic.... do aerophagia effects usually get fully vented during the morning? If one were to, say, increase their pressure and but also eat Mexican food for lunch and dinner, can you still blame the cpap in the evening???

That excuse wouldn't fly in my household. I suspect the telltale indication of what is to blame might be the odor if there was an odor. Mexican food usually produces a good ripe odor for me while any farts that might be from the aerophagia don't seem to have any odor.

I normally don't have any issues with aerophagia and don't have the excessive morning belches or farts or discomfort but a week or so ago for some reason I got a lot more air in my gut during the night and the next morning I was a world class farting machine.
Made my husband blush. He was like "what the hell is going on with you" and I just told him I was in training to compete with his farts.

So...

No, you aren't alone.
What was embarrassing in my situation was the fact that I had no warning at all that the sonic booms were imminent. No way or time to prepare myself. Sure glad I was home and not out in public but I still caused my grandson to just about wet his pants laughing at me when those sonic booms slipped out.

Can't go without a comment!! This thread is hilarious. I chuckled, giggled and laughed out loud, I have been on the CPAP now for 2 1/2 months and have yet to experience this....thank heaven!

The bleches I've done since starting cpap have been monumental to say the least. Having LPR does not help.

One thing I noticed is if I eat too soon before going to bed, its much worse. Also what you eat can make a huge difference too
