I was brave... no meds for sleepiness today...

Post by esangston » Fri Feb 03, 2012 12:25 pm

So today is the first time i havent taken my dexedrine... which is a med used to treat adhd and sometimes daytime sleepiness... I fell asleep last night on the couch and hubby didnt have the heart to move me... it didnt dawn on him i needed my cpap so i didnt sleep with it last night... but today i actually feel pretty good... I dont have the rush of ocd like cleaning symptoms i get from the dex, which is kinda cool cause i mean who wipes down their vehicle with a baby wipe at a red light anyways... or takes a razor blade to the tiles in the bathroom where the prior owners couldnt paint and had never heard of painters tape lol....

but over all ive been sitting on the couch surfing cpaptalk and facebook for about an hour and I"M STILL AWAKE... i kinda like this lol...

I'll prob still take my dex, as i do have horrible adhd and have since i was a kid prior to osa.... and without dex im all over the place... i cant even get one room clean cause i bounce around so much and i dont pay attention to the things i need to but atleast now i know that i dont have to take it every day... cause sometimes its sooo much better to veg out with the kids... i may even discuss with my doc about lowering my dose as i dont need it to keep me awake...

just thought id share... ima go kiss my cpap...

Yes, I'm married to man with a bad case of narcolepsy. And yup, I have 3 kids under age 4... Adding OSA just seemed like the right thing to do! :-)

Talk to your doctor before making big changes with dexedrine - it's not something you want to either 'just' quit cold turkey, or even play much with the schedule... lowering the dosage slightly over time would probably be safer than suddenly skipping a night or two altogether, but it's great that you may no longer need as much! I'm just nosey, but aren't there other meds out now that help ADHD besides dex?

ABSOLUTELY! Dexedrine is a very old medication and there are lots of newer, smoother wake-promoting agents (that perhaps might give you attention without the compulsiveness you don't seem to like).

yeah they have other meds... but ive been on dex since i was 14 so approching 13 years off and on, always stopped taking it before, during and after pregnancy lol... my bodys so use to dex that the meds for adhd that are nonnarcotic or nonstimulant dont do anything really. I never used it for the wakefull effect until the OSA reared its ugly head prior to diagnosis. Doc also likes me taking it cause it was supposed to help with the weight but without the osa being treated that was a slim chance. I dont mind the ocd stuff, but sometimes they are annoying. And I've been on the dex for so long that i can deal with the ins and outs... its perfectly ok to stop dex without weanng the dosage off... believe it or not the dex is actually out of my system within 3 days of stopping it. My doc trusts my judgement on the dex and if i want to lower the dosage i can just call and ask for an rx and hell write it. Ive been on it so long i prob know more about it than the dr does lol... The newer meds are expensive and even without insurance, the dex is under $50 a month...

and dex isnt a night time med, its a day time med.

With new energy from CPAP, your doc might want to consider reducing your dosage.
When you and your doctor are partners, you can benefit.
