nasal pillow setting on S9?

Post by bayourest » Fri Feb 03, 2012 7:24 am

I've just got a swift LT to try out and I just want to check for the correct setting on the S9. The mask options are full face, nasal, and nasal ultra. It's clearly not full face, but I am not sure which of the other 2 is the correct setting for nasal pillows.
thanks

The S9 I briefly had had a fourth mask type: pillows. That one isn't on your list, even when you scroll through the entire list?

They are the only 3 options I have for Mask in the clinical settings. I have been through all the settings and find nothing about pillows. Maybe that would be considered "ultra nasal" ???

My S9 AutoSet has pillows as an option and that's what you set it on. If you have an AutoSet there's an option for pillows. Press the settings bar and under mask there is 4 options to choose from.

There should be a pillows option. Ultra nasal is for the Ultra Mirage.
From the clinical manual.

BTW the mask setting is for leak reporting since ResMed subtracts the vent rate before reporting leak rate.
If you left it at full face mask setting the worse that would happen is the machine subtract a little too much before reporting the leak. If leak was borderline bad might give a false low but if leak was minimal to none anyway...not a huge deal. Mask setting only affects the leak reporting numbers. Nasal mask setting would likely be very close to vent rate for the nasal pillows. ResMed uses a generic average number anyway.

OK thanks everyone....I found it!! when I got to "mask" in the settings it was set at full face and turning clockwise showed me only the other 2 options. But after your replies I found pillows by turning the knob counterclockwise...I guess I just thought it cycled though all the options on clockwise turn!!
now I am set...I am going to read archives etc about fitting pillows and see how I do.
Does anyone recommend using epr with pillows? I normally dont use it. my minimum pressure is 13 which is quite comfortable with my quattro FX

Have you never used nasal pillows? If not, it will likely feel like a hurricane blowing up your nose. I would suggest using EPR just to make exhale a little easier for the time being. See how you do with it.
If you have never had all that air going straight up your nose it may be a little hard to learn to exhale against until you get used to it. I liked EPR when I tried it. The difference between inhale and exhale makes it more like natural breathing. At least that is what I found. Very similar to what I have when I use the BiPap with settings of EPAP at 9 and IPAP at 13 which is so much easier to breathe with than when I have a 1 cm difference. It is the difference that allows for comfort. You may be different but it doesn't hurt to try. You may or may not need to adjust the pressure to allow for the reduction that EPR gives in overall pressure average.

Up to you though.. You might find that you don't need EPR.

What is the difference between the Nasal Pillow setting and the Pillow setting on the machine?
