Hose
How often should my hose be replaced and how about the filters to my machine. I have a Respironics M Series Pro with C-flex and heated humidity?
Thanks

						Re: Hose
You should check your filters every week, and replace the white one when it's dirty, and wash the grey reusable one. Once a week is a good starting point, then you will figure out how often it's really necessary in YOUR world. One thing I always do is replace and wash filters every time I travel somewhere, to get the foreign flora out of the machine.
Hoses probably don't need to be replaced unless they crack, spring a leak, or otherwise become damaged. I've got my original hose from April 2007 and it's fine. I just bought another hose, just for the heck of it, and I needed to spend some FSA money, but there was nothing wrong with the first one.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.

Re: Hose
What Babs said ... and I've been using my hose since about August 2006 and it is still like new when I first got it.

						Re: Hose
I've been using the same hose I started with.......3 1/2 years ago (May 2005).
I have spare hoses, filters and masks.....but am still using the originals. (I wash out my foam filter every other weekend)
Yep, they want to sell those $10 hoses for $60.

Re: Hose
My insurance covers DME supplies at 100%... I still won't change my hose that often. At the minimum, I'll get 6 months to a year out of one. And they still have no problems.
What I have done: When I get a new hose, I'll put the old hose into the M-Series bag for when I travel. (One thing already packed.)

Re: Hose
Yeah, I did the same thing, Craig. I keep the 10 footer all snuggled hosed and already packed and ready to go in the travel bag. Just in case the motel situation isn't conducive to a shorter hose.

My insurance was "hosed" .. now that I have seen the billing.
Hose (6 ft) $60
White Filter $20
Gray Filter $19
For what they were charged, I could have bought several hoses, tons of filters .. but I am thinking that is how they are making money?
Sad

When you take into consideration that CPAP.COM is still making a profit at THEIR prices, that makes the markup even bigger for the local DMEs.

Re: Hose
Find out from your insurance if you can buy online and then submit for reimbursement.
I only get about 80% reimbursement from my insurance when I do it this way, but I cover the rest with pre-tax dollars from my FSA. I don't mind doing this - much - because it beats the aggravation of the local DME. However, I've recently heard there is a local DME who doesn't suck massively, and I might investigate if my insurance will work with tme. We'll see. Right now I can afford to do what I'm doing.
Cheers,
Babs

						Re: Hose
My DME suggested I purchase a 5 year supply of filters for my machine for some ridiculous price.
That along with an extra hose and mask... all at the outset.
Guess they figure the best time to "hose" me was right at the start.

Re: Hose
They do that because statistics show that 50% of cpap patients give up the hose within the first few months.
Could be those statistics are flawed - and what patients are giving up are ignorant DME's with rotten customer service.
Ooops! Did I say that out loud?

Re: Hose
It is a very good idea to have an extra hose, mask, and a few filters. They are not very expensive when purchased online. A ComfortGel nasal mask with headgear, hose, and filters should cost just over $100 when bought online.
ComfortGel $82
6-Foot hose $10
Filters ~$10
Shipping $0
-----------------------
Total $102
