Dry Mouth

Post by lesfam5 » Thu Nov 17, 2011 4:21 pm

I am a new CPAP user, in my 3rd week of using the ResMed S9 device with a humidifier and Swift FX nasal pillow mask. The machine is fine but I wake up throughout the night unable to swallow and needing to sip water. I believe opening my mouth while sleeping is causing the dry mouth.

Does anyone have any tricks on training myself to keep my mouth closed? I would like to avoid the alternatives of a full face mask or chin strap (as I am not keen on adding contraptions beyond the CPAP and nasal pillows!.

We do what we have to do......if a ffm is needed, then thats what you need....either that or tape. Do a search for tape or mouth breathing and you will get all kinds of suggestions. Go to the search field above and type in your question.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I still get dry mouth with a full face mask and my humidifier set at max. I have found that a generic lip balm helps keep my lips from drying out, but my tongue gets sore on the tip from the dryness and I usually end up having to take the mask off once or twice during the night to sip some water.

Try pressing the tip of your tongue very lightly on the roof of your mouth just behind your teeth. With your tongue in this position you won't mouth breathe and you'll greatly reduce your chances of aerophagia. You need to practice day and night until it's a habit.

Biotene mouth wash helps. I'm trying to train myself to breathe through my nose. When my body remembers my mouth is a lot less dry.

If you ultimately determine that all the standard remedies recommended here, included, but not limited to, full face masks, hybrid masks, moisturizing mouthwashes, increased humidity settings, chinstraps, headgear that have straps, "self training to keep mouth shut", etc., do not work for you, taping with 3M No. 2080 blue painter's tape will definitely solve your dry mouth problem. How do I know? Without tape and WITH all these other activities, I have severe EXTREME dry mouth and I have tried it all. Taping is now a part of my cpap life and provides me with a full night, every night, of uninterrupted sleep and rest. i have never experienced any of the alledged adverse results of taping. And shortly after I post this, Archangle and/or some other well-meaning mis-guided soul will tell you taping your mouth shut is dangerous, that you might throw up, breathe vomit and die, or suffocate from breathing CO2 as a result of a power outage. All these beliefs, accompanied by doomsday warnings, in my opinion, are not substantiated, and are pure bunk. In fact, they may now even qualify as a new conspiracy theory. Okay, Archangle, your turn.

SMenasco, don't get him started again. Well, ok why not. Jump in Archangle. Those of us who tape need a good laugh.

I have the same problem and had my humidfier set at 2.0, I boosted it up to 3.5 and noticed less dry mouth.

Sleep therapy changed my life for the better, never knew how bad it was before I got hooked to "the machine".

You forgot to mention anal seepage, hemorrhoids, cancer, an unusual urge to gamble or increased sexual urges and/or behaviors, grow man boobs, you could end up as a psychotic wolfman with VD with anal bleeding, a persistent painful erection with ejaculation failure, and anal boobs just to name a few.

I'm sorry if I forgot any... just wanted to ensure I provided a more complete list of things that could go wrong.

Tape over the mouth is what I use with my nasal pillows mask. Lets me use a mask that's much more comfortable for me than a full face mask. Mouth breathing inside a FF mask was always extremely drying for me, even with a really good heated humidifier cranked up all the way, and with the use of an Aussie heated hose.

For many months I tried "training" my tongue to form the habit of maintaining a leak proof seal inside my mouth, but that habit never "stuck" (pun intended.) Works for some, but not for me. Chin straps also did nothing to prevent my nighttime mouth breathing. Tape is an effective, and reasonably comfortable, method for me ... so putting tape over my mouth is what I've been doing every night for almost seven years. Everyone is different, so it's worthwhile to try all kinds of methods if mouth leaks/mouth breathing is a problem. Many ways are in these discussions:
