OK, with some advise from some folks at Tech-Report I am going to try and get EncoreViewer 2 to work inside Windows 7 64-Bit Premium Home Edition. The Tech-Report guys suggested I try VMWare Player, which is absolutely free for personal use!
You will need:
your Windows XP Pro 32-bit installation disk and COA serial number
your copy of EncoreViewer 2
MS Installer 3.1 (automatic updates will give it to you)
A copy of MS Net (2.0 or higher)
About 5GB of disk space for the virtual machine (I used 10GB)
The first step is to go and download VMWare Player here...http://www.vmware.com/products/player/. I installed it and it asked me for a virtual machine hard drive size. I only want to run this one app and my pulse oximeter software, so I set it at 10GB. I hope this is enough. But I do not want to waste space because this is an SSD drive. The VMWare player installs and then asks for your WinXP disk and then installs Windows XP inside this new virtual machine. Once this is done, you now have a complete working copy of Windows XP running on your Widows 7 machine. Heh, heh, its pretty cool; I am so nerdy. Looks like I now have used 2.06GB of 9.98GB and have 7.92GB of remaining free space, so far.
One problem I immediately find is that you have absolutely no access to any drive space outside that of your machine.
OK, inside your new XP machine you can set up an exchange folder on your host system..
you right click on the virtual machine task bar which is on the right side of the WinXP task bar. There are two tabs: Hardware and Options
Under the Options tab you can select shared folders and enable one or more folders that can be seen by both your VMWare Player window and by your host operating system. I chose to call mine "VMWare_Shares
Next, I put dotnetfx35.exe (MS NET 3.5) into the folder and install it in my virtual WinXP. Oops, a slight SNAFU, looks like you have to enable system updates and let WinXP download MS installer 3.1. Once that is done and installed, then you can install MS Net. Finally, I install EncoreViewer 2 and we are off to the races.
I now have used 3.91GB of the space and have 6.07GB left for other programs.
I am about to see if this all works.
OK, caveat, do not let the virtual machine install a USB driver, or if it does, uninstall it. Let EncoreViewer take care of that.
So, the acid test. I start EncoreViewer, I make a new user, I plug in the card reader. After a short wait...
the 'Download from Device' button becomes active and YES! Yippie! it works!

Re: How to run EncoreViewer 2 inside Win7
I have Encore Viewer 2.0 working on this new Windows 7 Home Premium laptop 64 bit.
I Did not try to let the install setup files do the do an install from disc prompt.
All that I did was copy the files and folders to a new folder on my desktop minus setup.exe file. (old fashioned may moving files) I used explorer to open the disc so that I had access to the files and folders. Copied all and pasted to new folder.
Once the files were copied in the new folder on my desktop, I then opened the folder and searched for the application.exe file with the letter E in blue letters. Right click on that file.. Pin to start menu for each and lazy way to access.
I go to start menu to open Viewer 2.0 and it works just fine.

Yes, I have done that also. However, you cannot use the smartcard reader to download new data. Thus this silly work around.

Ahh, okay the Infineer DT3500. Mine is out on loan so I can't test it.Mr Bill wrote:Yes, I have done that also. However, you cannot use the smartcard reader to download new data. Thus this silly work around.
Obviously it works with the PR S1 SD card. Hadn't thought about or needed to use the Smart card and the DT 3500.

Re: How to run EncoreViewer 2 inside Win7
The problem isn't getting EncoreViewer to run in Win 7, it's getting it to run in Win 7 32 bit. It works fine in Win 7 32 bit, as it's supposed to seeing as it's a 32 bit app. Jim

Re: How to run EncoreViewer 2 inside Win7
Well, I am talking about Win7 64 bit here. I have no idea about whether this problem all goes away in Win7 32 bit. The problem is getting EncoreViewer to download from the Infineer DT3500 smartcard reader from Win7 64-bit. I will change the thread title to reflect this.Goofproof wrote:The problem isn't getting EncoreViewer to run in Win 7, it's getting it to run in Win 7 32 bit.
