Radical chin strap - What do you think?

Post by roster » Tue Mar 01, 2011 12:13 pm

Watch video http://sleepapneasolutionsinc.com/

Here are some of the comments I made to Russell.
Previous generations of chin straps may hold the jaws shut but still allow air to leak between the lips. Your sleep apnea chin strap seems to solve this problem. It looks like a good solution for CPAPers who do not like their full face masks and would like to use a nasal mask or nasal pillows.

Also, it seems your chin strap places pressure on the cheeks. Some CPAPers have problems with arousals because of air pressure backing up into their mouths and causing their cheeks to balloon out. Your chin strap may very well prevent this problem also.

Looks funny , but maybe it works?

No more funny tape and polident?

Might possibly work but for nasal pillows only. Would be Impossible to use with a FF Mask.

It looks like something out of a psyche ward or from Silence of the Lambs.... yikes! Get a straight jacket and you'd have a matched outfit.

I think I'll stick with my PapCap, however if i got one of those for the wife it would make getting to sleep some nights easier

I think I would blow air out that material. I use painter's tape and it works great.........although when I suddenly sneeze or cough, a little of my brains come out my ears....
I'm sure my cheeks are probably puffed up all night, but I don't think that causes any problem.

Looks like a good idea. And looks well made and comfy.

I've ordered the "Sleep Apnea" design. Will give it a try and let you all know if it can prevent mouthbreathing/mouthairleaking while using CPAP for this inveterate breathes-through-mouth-when-sleeping person.

While I was impressed (proof will be in the pudding) with what I saw on the video for the version I ordered, I wasn't impressed at all with the repeated misinformation about REM being "deep sleep" and some of the other statements made on the webpage and in the video. Quite a few statements made as "fact" were questionable, imho.

If (as I suspect will happen...maybe not) the thick cloth can't hold back the air I know will be trying to escape my mouth, I can always add "taped mouth" underneath. Or perhaps I'll add a big flat silicone patch over the mouth but not stuck to the mouth.

At any rate, this looks to be more comfortable than the chin strap I already have to use along with taped mouth. Your point about the sides helping keep the cheeks from ballooning out is a good point in favor of the design, roster/rooster. That's the main reason I already use a chinstrap with plenty of homemade padding along with my mouthtaping each night.

Ballooning cheeks per se don't bother me, although I'm sure that can cause wakeups or arousals for some people. However, ballooning cheeks do tend to loosen tape for me. Keeping my cheeks flat keeps tape more securely in place for me.

Looking forward to trying this design - without tape. We'll see.

Thanks for the link, roster/rooster.

Russ is a neophyte, but neophytes quite oft.., er uh, sometimes find novel solutions that the more knowledgeable are blinded from.

I am sure you will give the strap a good workout and let us know the results. If you don't mind, also tell us the fiber content shown on the label. Thanks.

I almost always (that's more than just "often" ) cut labels off the very first thing, but I'll try to restrain myself long enough to read and report the fiber content.
