Humidifier - does it work?

Post by hipcat » Sun Nov 14, 2010 8:14 am

I am a newbie to cpap and have a Resperonics S1. I have a problem with a headache and very dry nose and mouth every AM - even with humidity set to 5. I wonder is the humidifier is working correctly.....how much water should be used from the reservoir in an 8 hr period? The heating element works. I appreciate any help and info!

Hi Hipcat,

First it would be helpful to us to know what equipment you use. you can change that by going to your user controls at the top of the page ( just below the search bar). You have to be a registered user though.

Now About the Humidifier, I know that mine works fine and I go through about a tank of water a week now that winter has come. but this last summer I probably went through one a month. There can be lots of factors why your nose is dry, are you mouth breathing you humidity is set to low, it could be anything. I am sure someone will be along that has a better answer then me.
Glad to see you here hope you stick around, there are lots of grate people here to help with anything (cpap related)you could imagine.

In this case I think your humidifier setting is way too high.

Try a setting of 1 or 2 for a few days, depending on where in the world you live (If your in north america, what state or province?)

I'm on the westcoast of canada and my setting is 2 in mid-winter but 1 right now and in the summer I have it in passover mode.

Passover mode = humidifier off but with water in the reservoir.

There is natural humidity in the air and therefore you don't need it that high unless your in the sahara desert.

Hi There---I do live in the desert! And my setting is a 2. I fill up my tank though every other day--YUP--that is right--I cannot go more than 2 days without topping it off. It is dry here --LOL! i THINK 5 is way too high--maybe that is why you have a headache in the mornings. Sometimes too much humidity makes me stuffy and headachey--so try turning it down to a 1 or 2 to see how that goes,

Hope this helps,
Carrie

I use an old Respironics BiPAP Plus with a heated humidifier, and I do set it on "5" . In a 7 hour sleep period I typically use about 10-12 ounces of water. And since I purchased a double thickness insulated hose cover I do not experience rainout. My own experience with unheated passover was that it simply didn't pick up enough water vapor to do any good. I am a long-time xpap user but have just had a humidifier about three or four years, and I wouldn't even consider not using it.
