Checking EPR on a ResMed S9 AutoSet

Post by Physician » Wed Jul 14, 2010 12:14 pm

When using EPR on an S8 AutoSet, I could feel the EPR work at a setting of "2" or "3". However, with the S9 AutoSet, I cannot detect the expiratory difference even with a setting of "3", the maximum allowable.

How can this differential be checked to see if it's working ? Is there an in-line manometer available ?

I am assuming you have the EPR set to FULL TIME and not OFF ?

You can set EPR to Off, Ramp Only, Full Time.
You can select an EPR Level of Patient (configurable by the patient), Off, 1, 2, or 3 cm H2O.

Just checking

First thing I would do, personally, is crank the pressure up a notch and then turn the EPR OFF completely to see if I noticed a difference. Then turn the EPR back on with a setting of -3 (i.e. -3 cm H2O) and see if you then notice a difference. And finally return to your normal pressure range and see, again, if there is a difference in exhale pressure. I, too, note that with the S9 Auto the EPR is not quite as pronounced and noticable as it was with the S8 Autoset II for some reason, but I find it perfectly comfy.

Yes. EPR 3 is full time.

There is a setting in the S9 clinical menu that controls the EPR action.

It has two options, one of which is to make EPR work in the same way that it worked on an S8 and the other (which is the factory default) is a new response pattern which is somewhat different to the way the S8 worked. There is a an explanation on what the difference is somewhere in the S9 marketing collateral or user guide, but off hand I don't recall where I saw it now

If you want the S9 EPR to feel like your S8, you will need to change the setting to the S8 response.

Cheers,

Bill

Bill, are you referring to the S9's "EPR Inhale" setting? Choices are Medium or Fast. Medium is the default. I had that feature (and the same two choices) on my S8 Elite II machine as well. "EPR Inhale" is not an option on the S9 in AutoSet mode -- only in CPAP mode. EPR itself is available in both modes, though.
