Help - Windows 7 & CMS Oximeter Software/Driver
Help - Windows 7 & CMS Oximeter Software/Driver
My computer crashed the other day. I was using Windows XP, and now I'm looking at new computers that run Windows 7 Professional. I have a Contec CMS Model 50-E oximeter. Can anyone tell me if the SpO2 software for the oximeter runs without problems on Windows 7? If so, which version of the software are you using?
Also, is there a driver that needs to be installed in order to download the oximeter data, or is it just plug and play? Do I need to be concerned if the new Windows 7 Professional system is 32-bit or 64-bit?
I don't know much about modern computer hardware/operating systems, so I could really use your help with this! Thanks!

Re: Help - Windows 7 & CMS Oximeter Software/Driver
I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit running on my computer and have the software for the CMS-50E running fine on my computer.
When I got the oximeter, I was using Windows Vista and I loaded the software on with that operating system.
When I upgraded to Windows 7, I had no problems with my oximeter software. I did not have to reinstall it or do anything. You will have to install it of course, since you are getting a new computer.
I didn't have to install any drivers when I first loaded on the software for my oximeter.
You shouldn't have any problems with it at all but then---I'm not very computer literate. I could only share my good experience with this software and my operating systems.

Thanks very much, Hawthorne! Does anyone know if the SpO2 software also works fine with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit system?
Re: Help - Windows 7 & CMS Oximeter Software/Driver
I recently bought the 50E. I only installed the software on my XP laptop, and not on the WIndows 7 laptop. Worked fine. Very trivial piece of software, so should work on Win7.
Their supplied USB cable is needed. A regular USB->miniUSB doesn't work.

Thanks, manas. I had the SpO2 software installed on my XP computer without any problems too, but I need to make sure that it'll work with Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit, so I'm hoping that someone can confirm that.

It works for me with Win 7 Ultimate x64, so it should also work fine with Win 7 Pro x64.DreamOn wrote:Does anyone know if the SpO2 software also works fine with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit system?

Re: Help - Windows 7 & CMS Oximeter Software/Driver
I have problems installing on win 7. I had it working on an old PC with XP but when I upgraded the old PC to win7 it didn't work and when I built a new PC with the same win7 program, still doesn't work. Neither of the 02 programs recognize the meter. If I find solution I will post, but their is some sort of issue.
Re: Help - Windows 7 & CMS Oximeter Software/Driver
I haven't been able to get my CMS50FW working with any permutation of the software versions available at
pulseoxstore (dot) com
I'm trying to put it on a Win 7 pro 64 Bit laptop. There are version specific to that on the site, but I cannot get the functionality through bluetooth that the manuals report. Ideally I'd like to get this working with SleepHead so I can get a better handle on my apnea.
I would really appreciate any help getting this going as I've spent many hours beating my head against this. There are casual mentions of software combinations to make this work on the web, but perhaps I'm not removing an old driver that is "stuck" from a previous install? In any case, nothing working so far, so many thanks to anyone who can help!

Also, I believe that Sleepyhead just imports the data, it doesn't do real-time, though I could be wrong as well.

Re: Help - Windows 7 & CMS Oximeter Software/Driver
I'm using the CMS-50F with no problems on Windows 7 Home Premium (ditto on an older computer with Windows 7 Ultimate) after tripping on all the snags reported in this thread (except Bluetooth) when I first got my pulse-ox about a year ago. I included the workarounds I learned in the instructions list in my signature lines and repeated here below. If you follow it carefully and still get snagged, let us know at what point in the list that that happened and we'll try to work it through together.

Inserting CMS-50 Pulse-Ox Graphs into SleepyHead
Postby Papit on Mon Apr 23, 2012 5:05 pm (rev.7-2013)
Here's the operating procedure I use for my CMS-50F and a link to separate instructions for CMS-50D+ users. For the benefit of xpap new-comers and especially those fairly new to computers, the steps below include more detail than advanced users are accustomed to seeing. The goal is to help new Contec CMS-50E and CMS-50F Pulse-Oximeter users acquire reliable daily access to their pulse-ox graphs in SleepyHead software.
If you have a CMS-50D+, please go to Burkebang's 'Norwegian' solution at viewtopic.php?f=1&t=84205&st=0&sk=t&sd= ... 15#p763813
If you continue to have issues obtaining your pulse-ox graphs in SleepyHead, others in the forum may provide further help if you start a new thread or you can send me a PM to discuss what may be a new issue to me.
(Note for PC users: If difficulties persist after using these instructions with your PC, go to 'Manuals/Downloads' at http://www.pulseoxstore.com/Manuals-Downloads.html to download and reinstall the latest SpO2 Review software for your specific Pulse-Ox firmware version and your computer's specific Operating system. MAC users: The supplied Pulse-Ox software may not as yet be compatible with the MAC.
CMS-50E/F Pulse-Oximeter operating procedure
A. Record your Pulse-Ox data over night
1. Be sure the current time in both your pulse-ox and your xpap machine are set to the same time and check that am/pm are correct and the same. Aim to set the two current time settings within a few seconds of each other if not exactly the same.
2. After readying your pulse-ox and masking up at night, turn ON both your pulse-ox and xpap machine at the same time (or within a few seconds of each other) so all the graphs will cover the same full sleep time period.
3. Turn Record to ON.
4. Insert a finger into the sensor and sleep with it all night. Switch fingers every few nights if one gets sore. (I actually made a very tiny slit in the rubber finger grip to lessen its squeeze. See other forum threads.)
5. Turn Record OFF when you awaken in the morning.
B. Import your XPAP data to Sleepyhead
1. If you use SleepyHead software, remove the SD Memory Card from your xpap machine and insert it into the SD card reader on your computer.
2. Open SleepyHead and click ‘Import’ to upload the xpap sleep session data from your SD card.
3. Click ‘My Computer’ at upper left on your desktop screen, right click on the drive containing the SD card, click ‘Eject’ and remove the card.
4. Return the SD card to your xpap machine and reinstall it to capture tonight's sleep data.
C. Upload and view your Pulse-Ox data
1. Turn 'USB' to ON on the Pulse-Ox and connect it to a USB computer port using the provided cable.
2. Click the 'Green Heart' icon on your computer desktop to open SpO2 Review software.
3. Click the 'Magnifying Glass' icon/"Not Active" button on the bottom line to open a New Session.
(Click ‘Cancel’ and repeat this Step if the ‘New Session’ button on top line is not shown as selected. If necessary, restart your computer and return to Step 2.)
4. Enter a file name for last night's sleep. To precisely define 'last night's sleep and avoid date confusion, I use a hybrid date format, (e.g., MM-dd.dd-YY) for last night/this morning's (dates) sleep data. Then click OK. A message, "Device Connected: waiting for data…" should be displayed.
(If you see a message, "Can’t open COM #", click OK, disconnect the USB cable from the Pulse-Ox, then reconnect it and
go back to Step 3. If necessary, restart your computer and return to Step 3.)
5. If Record is ON, turn Record OFF on the Pulse-Ox.
6. Turn Upload ON on the Pulse-Ox.
7. Wait (up to a minute) while ‘Receiving data, Please wait….’ is displayed.
8. View the Pulse-Ox graphs. Click ‘M’ on bottom line and set the Time scale by checking "All Data". Click OK.
D. View the Pulse-Ox Reports and Graphs in the SpO2 Review CMS-50 software
9. Click the Printer icon button in the lower far right corner to select your pulse-ox Report Print Settings, select a report (e.g.,'OxiMetry Report'), and click ‘Preview’. For easier viewing change the ‘%‘ button to 100% or higher (right-most button at top of screen). View the graphs and data and, if needed, click the Print button on the left top line to save a hardcopy for your doctor or your hardcopy file.
10. Press and hold Power off to turn OFF the Pulse-Ox (“Bye Bye!”).
11. Recharge the Pulse-Ox by either leaving it connected to your powered up computer or using the supplied Charger plugged into a standard electric wall outlet. It works with both 120 and 240 volts ac power.
E. View the Pulse Ox Reports and Graphs in SleepyHead
1. Open SleepyHead and click the 'Oximetry' tab on the right sidebar or under the View menu at top. Disregard the "No Oximetry Data" subtitle. Click the ‘Open .spo/R File’ button in the lower right. (If your newly created oximetry data file does not show up in a list of one or more files, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\SpO2\Data.) Select an oximetry data file by clicking the sleep file for the date you want to view and click ‘Open’. You should now see your red Pulse Rate and blue SpO2 oximetry graphs vs. clock time.
2. Click the Save icon button just left of ‘Open .spo/R File’ button and confirm ‘Yes’ that you want to save the data.
3. Now click ‘Data’ on the very top main menu line, then click ‘Rebuild Oximetry Indices’.
4. Exit out and restart SleepyHead. Click the 'Daily' tab to view the Pulse Rate and SpO2 Oximetry graphs aligned in SleepyHead's time scale. They are at the bottom of the stack and each can be moved up by hovering your pointer directly over the graph heading (left-side); then press and hold the left mouse button and drag the graph up to your preferred position in the stack.
5. After you click the 'Daily' tab, you can click on any red dates to see pulse-ox charts for your sleep on those dates in tandem with the standard graphs.
(Note: All the steps above need to be performed to see pulse-ox graphs and data for a selected date in SleepyHead. If the clock time setting on the Pulse-Ox and on your xpap machine do not match closely enough, you will see a notice that the pulse-ox data cannot be linked with SleepyHead. Re-sychronize the current time on the Pulse-Ox so it's the same as the time on your xpap machine. Also Note that fractured sleep sessions in SleepyHead are listed in the lower left and each can be toggled ON and OFF. User comments and suggestions are always welcome to update these instructions.)

I'm trying to put it on a Win 7 pro 64 Bit laptop. There are version specific to that on the site, but I cannot get the functionality through bluetooth that the manuals report. Ideally I'd like to get this working with SleepHead so I can get a better handle on my apnea.

My question is are you sure that your laptop supports Bluetooth? If your computer doesn't have that, then of course you can't use it. Not trying to sound like a smart butt or anything. While looking up some information about your pulseox, I found this as well: CMS50FW is designed and tested with the Bluetooth driver that comes with Windows. Some third party Bluetooth drivers (eg IVT) may caused problems. You may need to uninstall the third party driver and fall back to the default Windows driver.
This is a good question. I was indeed having trouble with my brand new Dell M6700 laptop's bluetooth. Went through hell trying to get it fixed, it's still not fixed because I don't have any more time to devote to fixing my brand new Dell M6700 (yes, I'm very bothered by this).
So! I put in a Cirago BT dongle, which works great. I pair up with SpO2 just fine. Asks me for PIN, gets the right hardware address, so it's obviously communicating ok. Then, that's where it all stops. I cannot get any communication going at all. The USB cable that comes with the CMS causes a USB/com bus to be installed, which automatically is assigned to port 40. When I remove that, and try to use BT only, I cannot get communication to anything. None of the three apps that come with the CMS communicate with BT. I can get them to talk to the USB cable's com link, but that's it. I'm flummoxed.
I have been able to pair to 3 different pieces of hardware with the CMS. There is a very slick Android App called MyFitnessCompanion which I can also pair to, but again, no BT communication. MFC tech support is giving me some things to try (very helpful guy), but that's a work in progress.
I wonder if there isn't a BT utility out there to sort of "test" BT communications at a very basic level. Sort of like a serial breakout tester. Does anyone know? Thanks for your help guys!
I understand what you mean about a potential need for the windows driver, although I don't know if there even is such a think as a windows driver, because all of the bluetooth hardware out there has drivers written by third parties. (toshiba, etc)

Re: Help - Windows 7 & CMS Oximeter Software/Driver
I have a new CMS550FW bluetooth.
Works great, but **** notice you have to turn wireless on each time right before you try to connect to the device in SPO2***. It gets turned off overnight (when turned on to record I bet).
I am on Windows 7 64 bit home version. The instructions said use the standard Microsoft bluetooth driver (I just did plug and play).
So for me,
Take CMS550FW with bluetooth.
Turn it on, make sure recording is off and Wireless is on (Wireless is on that main menu, just above record).
I run SPO2 Assistent, click on File, then Connect Device, a pop up box appears.
Give it a minute and the device shows up. Bluetooth - it has to be line of sight of course, I have them about 3' away and works fine.
Click on View Device Stored Data Only (bottom left of the popup box), click on the device that shows in the list to highlight it, then click on Connect. NOTE: IT unhighlights the device if not done in this order but it will still work.
A new popup box appears - Device Store Data
Click on the box that shows in the table (Mine says []1 user 1 (timestamp) (timestamp), click on the []
Then click on Receive Data.
Box pops - Receiving Device Stored Data with progress bar.
The file is saved.
Then you need to open the file (File Open, look for file with the correct timestamp).
Hope that helps.
Papit - maybe you can include that data for your instructions for future use?
