Fast Heart rate

Post by SkipperH » Tue Feb 09, 2010 4:24 am

Is there a setting that needs to be changed on my CPAP machine if I'm waking up with an increased heart rate? I haven't checked it yet, but it is considerably faster. Thanks.

check your heart rate...could be AFIB if it's erratic

I'd check with my doctor on that one. There are too many variables to try to diagnose it here, imho.

I think you should check with your doctor too. Was your heart rate increased pre c-pap?

See your Doctor right away. I have issues with a fast, erratic heart rate and they got it under control once they were able to see it in action when I went to the emergency room.....scary stuff

As was mentioned, too many variables.
Some things that can speed up your heartrate: eating or alcohol before bedtime, gas in your stomach, caffeine, anxiety, perimenopause (if you're female), certain medications, onset of a virus, dehydration, anemia, etc.

Raised when wakeup following an event...that's typical. Raised when wake up in the morning? Does it last for more than a few minutes? If so and if it were happening to me, I'd talk to my doc and verify nothing else is going on.

Occasionally, I get a faster heart rate in the morning. That's usually after a "bad" night on CPAP, where I've ended up on my back or having digestive issues, and then get a cluster of apneas before I wake while I'm dreaming (REM).

Not that we can (or should) diagnose here, but I'm just curious:

How fast is it? Does it feel like a regular rhythm? When it does happen to me, mine is usually a little fast but very regular.

Still, have it checked out by your doctor or cardiologist.

Sudden awakenings with elevated heart rate was one of my first clues that I had sleep apnea. After a while of struggling to breathe with an apnea, the brain wakes up the body with a shot of adrenaline which kicks the heart rate up a notch or two. If you are continuing to have this happen even on CPAP, this may mean your pressure is set too low to prevent some of the apnea events.

That said, I wouldn't rely on this board for a reading on this issue. Discuss it with your doctor to ensure it isn't something else.

In the mean time, you could see if magnesium supplements will help.

Thanks for all the responses. I will check with my doctor, I've got an appointment coming up. I've got a host of aliments that could be contributing to this.
