Auto CPAP Algorithm

Post by Gollimari » Sun Aug 30, 2009 11:52 am

A hypothetical question. If a person who has no OSA, no UARS or respiratory problem were to use a AUTO Cpap say REMSTAR M series or RESMED with setting 4 to 20 cmH2O would the pressure rise? to above 10cm or below 10?

The reason I asked this is because I was prescibed for a trial of Auto CPAP therapy 4-20 cm for a month after my sleep study, PSG and MLST. The PSG showed I had relative good night sleep with results, AH=6, MLST=6.5mins, O2sat=94%. The doctor said my OSA is very mild and not likely to be the reason for for my daytime sleepiness problem, but the MLST indicated that I was able to fall asleep at an average time of 6.5mins. This togehter with Elpworth test=18 showed that I indeed have daytime sleepiness problem. Nevertheless, to isolate OSA, the doc put me on this Auto CPAP trial.

I have tried a Remstar M series w Aflex with 4-20 cmH2O. The pressure went up to about 11.1cmH2O after about 5 hours of sleep. I woke up and was breathing normally for a while expecting the pressure to drop but it did not. Isn't the CPAP suppose to decrease when the breathing is normal.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

The machine doesn't do anything (meaningful) when you're awake. What happens when you sleep is entirely different.
