stupid question

Post by 2flamingos » Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:43 am

I know this will probably sound like a stupid question to many - but this has just started happening to me (last few days). I have started yawning a lot during the day. I am not tired or sleepy. In fact, I have been more alert and in a much better mood/frame of mind. I just can't stop yawning. My numbers have been pretty darn good - AHI around 3, leaks well within range (not straight line, but getting better), and pressure average below max (and 90% has been below max most of the time - not always).

What's up with that?

The yawning happened to me for a while at the beginning. I wasn't falling asleep during the day, was doing better, but was yawning, enough to notice. Now that you bring it up, I don't notice myself yawning as much. I think it went away for me after a few months on therapy. I've been on therapy since last July.

"The yawning reflex can be triggered by drugs or by psychological, hormonal, or neurological stimuli.

Yawning has an alerting, antisleep effect, which is probably enhanced by the generalized stretching movements that often accompany a yawn.

Studies have shown that yawning predicts a subsequently increased level of activity. However, the rate of yawning is not dependent on the amount of previous sleep or the time of waking or retiring to bed. More yawning occurs during the week than at weekends. Yawning is a feature of some pathological states.

Yawning is not a major clinical feature in patients with acute or chronic ventilatory failure.

We can probably conclude that yawning has an important role as an arousal mechanism to maintain alertness and defend against the onset of sleep. It can be affected by a range of behavioral influences, but much still needs to be learned about this everyday activity."

Whenever someone yawns in front of me, it makes me yawn, too. Seems to be a reflexive thing. Similarly, when I was watching a YouTube video recently of a guy with very obvious sleep apnea, who was struggling to breathe but not getting any air through at all, I found myself holding my breath right along with him. Freaky.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

You all need to be careful yawning when there are lots of flies around cuz yes ... it always happens
President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

Just reading this thread made me yawn a couple of times.

Not from boredom, but suggestibility... <--not a laugh, but a series of quick yawns!

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.
Unlike his passengers who died screaming as the car went over the cliff...

In the book Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell, he writes about how contagious a yawn is. He uses the word yawn about 6 times in one paragraph -- with the expectation that most people who read it will also start to yawn. (Yes, I've yawned through writing this little reply!)
Starting APAP use 6/11/09 -- Looking forward to a longer, more rested life!

Early in my treatment I yawned a LOT. Don't do it much any more, unless I read something like this!

You could try mouth taping during the day
