New machine smell
Hi,I just received my Remstar pro APAP. The air coming out of the machine smells pretty bad.I have had the machine running most of the afternoon. How long does it take for this to clear up? Thanks.

Re: New machine smell
I started with the Pro 2 - not an m series - I let it run 24/7 with the mask hooked up onto a stuffed animal at the suggestion of the RT.
I would also check out some way to degas your humidifier tank as I assume it is "soft" plastic.
For hoses and mask you can soak 24 hours in water vinegar or water baking soda or suitable soap you can handle solution, dry, air well, soak again, - after a few weeks most would be okay for me - but not all masks. You might want to do what I do and be "months" ahead in the planning stage - extra hose and mask always outgassed waiting.

Re: New machine smell
Since all the plastic is poly based (hydrocarbon) it will emit NVOS (non-volitile organic compounds) as it is derived from petroleum based products. If you can safely do it set it out in the sun for a few hours at a time and that should help it "off gas" so to speak.

Re: New machine smell
I had the plastic out-gas smell from my new ResMed unit.

Re: New machine smell
First isolate the source of the objectionable smell, the hose or the machine. If you have a new hose, most likely that is the source. That was my case when I started on cpap, soaking the hose in diluted vinegar for a few hours did the trick for me; I am very sensitive to these smells.
On the other hand, if the source is your machine, there is a small chance your machine was damaged (was it a repaired machine? was it exchanged by a DME?). A component inside burnt can produce some very potent noxious fumes, and you should not breath it. It can be dangerous. But the normal machine's new smell from the plastic chambers thru which the air passes should go away buy running it unattended for a couple of hours at most. If the machine has a component burned small, you should double check with the vendor and insist on getting a new machine, IMO. I have been an electronic hobbyist all thru my life, and I can tell even a small electronic component burned even after many days.
