My Jaw is still dragging the ground

Post by mikee » Mon Apr 27, 2009 5:29 pm

I've been on CPAP beginning 12/08. Since then have not heard anything from my DME. So today, I called the DME and asked if I could bring my card in and get a print out of my data, no problem.

After handing me the report, DME says ya know, it's time for a new mask and hose, I say no thanks, maybe just a new nose pillow at this time, my hose seems to be fine. So I ask, how much do you charge the insurance co. for these little latex free nose pillows, $31.50 your kidding right How much if I just out-of-pocket $31.50, maybe i'll wait but thanks anyway.

Here's the jaw dropper.

I asked why they thought I have not heard anything from the insurance co. and was told they do not accecpt my insurance. WHAT!!!!!!!!!! does that mean. Well Mikee, looks like you get a free ride. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this.

Well I just received a call from my old DME, they are going to refer me to another that does accecpt my insurance. I was told the new DME will set me up with new equipment and I will return my unit, less hose, mask etc...to the old DME. I'm guessing someone at the old DME made a bobo.

I am glad it is being taken care of. What a shock to find out AFTER the fact that they don't take your insurance!

I had a similar thing with my first DME. They shared the building with my doc and sleep lab which are in-network with my insurance. I actually thought they were part of the med group as they have an inside door and everything. When I asked, they told me they accepted my insurance so all was cool. Later I found out they are not in-network and freaked out. My out-of-network has a $6,900 deductible and while I had met my max out of pocket for in-network, it starts over for out-of-network claims.

I switched to an in-net DME and the first one took back my equipment and didn't charge me anything. They may have "accepted in-network rates" or something to get some money - I hope so as they were good folks.

The moral is make sure you ask the right question... "Are you an in-network provider for United Health Care?" or whatever your insurance is. I try to ask before the visit as I've had to walk out of offices when I didn't.
