Health Insurance Coverage with apnea

Post by RachelM » Sat Apr 18, 2009 7:46 am

I have been using CPAP for two+ years and am 100% compliant. II currently have excellent health insurance coverage through my husband's work. At $750/month for just my coverage and the price going up in July I can no longer afford this sweet policy. I am looking at less expensive alternatives. I have been told that MN does not allow health insurance policies to preexist conditions. As a result, the companies either don't write the policy or the premiums go upupup or they write with a high deductible.

In shopping for insurance, I was told at one company (State Farm) that their underwriters would not write the policy since I have apnea. I am currently investigating Health Partners and Blue Cross. I've been told to apply and their underwriters will decide. Any experience out there on these (or other) companies with writing new individual health insurance policies for someone with apnea?

We all are aware of the pitiful situation with regards to health care coverage in the U.S.

I think the best solution for you is to try to locate an organization that offers a group policy you can join when you become a member of the organization. For instance, our local chamber of commerce has a group policy that's quite good -- if you are a small business person. Or perhaps AARP, if you qualify for membership. An affinity group often has lower premiums -- but probably not as good coverage -- as a policy offered by some larger companies.

My individual policy doesn't cover any medical equipment, cpap included...
