Sleeping Too Long?

Post by DoriC » Fri Apr 17, 2009 5:59 pm

Don't laugh but I have a concern. Now that my husband is pretty well adjusted to his therapy he seems to be sleeping about 10hrs a night and would probably sleep longer if I didn't start making some noise. He seems fine. Is this OK or could too much sleeping be a problem? Pre-cpap he always awoke early, pale-looking and completely unrested and needed a long nap right after breakfast.

Dori,

At this point, I'd let him get the restorative sleep he needs. His body needs to try to recoup and heal from the years of poor sleep and everything else that went with that.

PS. I hope YOU'RE getting some good sleep, too.

It's called "sleep debt" and it's a good sign his long-term "broken sleep" is starting to heal. But as Den said, he needs to catch up for a while.

Dori, how long has he been on cpap? I have been on cpap for around seven months. At first I was just sleeping through the night with only waking up a few times throughout the night. Then after a few months I started getting extremely tired at night and going to bed much earlier. I used to go to bed anywhere from 10-1130 each night and wake up around 530 like clockwork. After a few months on cpap I was having trouble staying awake until 9 and was having a hard time getting out of bed even at 6.
My doctor checked my Thyroid and it wasn't producing like it should. My doctor said many people who have sleep apnea also have thyroid problems and are never tested and treated for it.

His Dr originally thought his fatigue was a thyroid problem and he was checked and was within normal range but I will mention it again at his next OV in May. I'm inclined to agree with Den that he's making up for so many years of disturbed sleep and enjoying good restorative sleep now. BTW, he only slept 8 last night and seemed rested today so I guess it's going to vary.
