How long is 'okay' for an apnea?
How long is 'okay' for an apnea?
Just started downloading detailed event data for my S8 Elite II and I'm noticing that I'm still having 10+ second apneas. None go over 15 seconds.. but should I be worried that they're still occuring? My numbers have been decent (between 5-10AHI), but I'm just worried about the length of reported apneas..

Re: How long is 'okay' for an apnea?
I have the ResMed S8 Autoset II, and I believe to even qualify as an apnea, the minimum is 10 seconds. As much as I would love to have zero apneas during the night, I'm just not sure that's possible for everyone. Remember, ResMeds account for about double the hypopneas (HI) that most other machines do, so I tend to focus more on the apneas (AI). Both are important though.
At my best (after 8 weeks), I still had two apneas during the night. My longest was 20 seconds, although I average around 10-15 seconds when they do happen.
What have your AI numbers been like? How do you feel?

Re: How long is 'okay' for an apnea?
AI numbers have been spectacular.. I've gotta update my thread with recent numbers. My AI numbers are never above 2, and are usually less than .5. I've been noticing a lot more leaking lately. Just bought the padacheek and put it on. Unfortunately, I had my headgear perfectly adjusted and had to dismantle it to put on the padacheeks.

I've pretty well started at the same time - still getting the occasional 1 to 4 apneas - they all seem to take between 11 and 14 seconds. Curiously, most of mine seem to occur in the 4 to 7 am period.

Re: How long is 'okay' for an apnea?
I think the goal is zero but may not be achievable by everyone and could be misleading too. So said another way, the goal should be to keep your blood O2 level above 90% ALL nite. Since the home user often lacks the equipment to detect O2 desats, we often go by how well feel the next day.

I have no doubt, how I sleep affects every waking moment.
I am making progress-NOW I remember that I can't remember

If this isn’t rocket science why are there so many spaceshots?

Re: How long is 'okay' for an apnea?
I have 3-4 per hour and they are 10-13 seconds. So these data must be OK, or I would be dndfncurbervjerverere....
Re: How long is 'okay' for an apnea?
Your question about an "OK" duration of apneas is probably not the question you should be asking. The real question is, "What should my blood O2 saturation level be while I'm asleep?"
I think Gumby is correct......but a little conservative. My opinion is that O2 saturation levels should be 93% or higher....all night.
Relatively inexpensive recording Oximeters are available that'll let you know how you're doing. I can recommend the SPO-7500 from Turner Medical....no script needed.

Re: How long is 'okay' for an apnea?
If my apneas are around the 10 second time frame, I'm pleased. I've had one night in the past two months when I only had one apnea and it was around 10 seconds. Most nights have at least 9 or 10; some of them lasting 35-45 seconds.
I most often have a flat line for leak rate (unless I shut off the machine to use the bathroom temporarily). My pressures in the 95th percentile are most often around 12.8
I would love to not have apneas or at least have them all around 10 seconds or less, but that's not in the tea leaves for me. I go more with how I feel during the day than what my numbers say.
