Run Windows XP inside of Vista - not entirely off topic

Post by Babette » Tue Apr 14, 2009 3:09 pm

This is right on topic for those of us still duct-taping an XP machine together to try to run Encore Pro and it's ancillary programs.

Someone mentioned this in another post, and I googled it. Got this:

http://lifehacker.com/software/windows/ ... 238071.php

http://www.technibble.com/how-to-create ... l-machine/

Has anyone here done it? Does it run Encore Pro? Can you walk some of us brain-damaged sleep deprived types through it?

Really hoping this might help 6ptstar with his latest computer crash. Kinda sorta hoping this might allow me to trash the old XP desktop and morph over to the Vista 32 laptop Mom gave me for Xmas.

Cheers,
B.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

Go to http://www.VirtualBox.org

virtualBox is now developed and maintained by Sun Microsystems and it's free free free.... and did I mention it's free?

You can run Xp in a VM inside Vista no problem. You can also innstall linux in a VM... or make MULTIPLE XP virtual machines so you can try stuff. Mess up a virtual machine (virus... spyware.... other windows nastiness)? Revert to snapshot, .... instantly fixed!

And yes I have run Encore Pro in a VM (windowsXP VM on a linux host). When choosing your virtualization software, you want to be sure it will give USB devices to the virtual machine. I know VirtualBox does this.

Oh boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This might solve the problem I have trying to work from home on my laptop. I can't seem to get into my student database remotely except from an XP machine. Everything else is fine - but this one program won't run, and that stops me dead.

Now to just acquire the XP disks.

THANK YOU!!!

Jerry, are you reading this???

Cheers,
B.

Yep I am reading this! I am also scratching my head! I don't know if I am smart enough to do this or not. Also have to get disks.

DANG IT! I was counting on you being smart enough, Jerry!!!

If I acquire disks, I'll share them with you.

LOL,

Encore Pro runs fine on Vista so I'm not sure why you would want to add another link in the chain?

Gumby, I think this student database is more important to her than Encore. She is not quite as obsessed over the numbers as some of us are as long as she feels good! The Laptop has Vista.

Well Gumby, that's understandable. I have two programs that need XP - Encore Pro, and my student database. I would like to have just one computer, not two. But so far, until I can get them to run on the laptop (Vista 32) I need to keep two. So far, I can't run the student database on the Vista laptop at all. I haven't tried to install Encore Pro, because that first thing means I'm keeping my XP system.

Jerry's right - it's more about that student database than Encore Pro, but they are both important, and I want to run both. I'm not willing to sacrifice either one.

Cheers,
B.
