hunidifier problem

Post by taz154 » Sat Apr 11, 2009 2:58 am

I have a resmed escape s8 with humidifier recenetly I have had to keep turning up the humidity level, the unit is still warm but there seems to be no moisture, previously I have experienced rain out at much lower settings, it is cool in our room and that has been a problem but now there is none and the unit is completely turned up and I have been waking with dry mouth. I believe the humidifier is a 3i and I am using a fisher and paykel 432 mask. The unit seems to be using water but I don't seem to be benefitting from it. The unit is 18 months old, water all parts are original. As I stated the heater is warm to the touch but the chamber doesnt feel warm . Any suggestions?

First thing to check.

Ensure that the stainless disk in the bottom of the tank is sitting directly on the heater plate. If there is even a tiny air gap you'll get very little heating (an air gap is an excellent insulator). Trying putting a little dab of heat sink paste on the heater plate if there is an air gap. Heat sink paste is designed to create an efficient thermal bridge. You can buy it in a small tube at an electronics parts retailer. Only recommendation is that you don't use it as toothpaste - not nice

You could try vaseline, petroleum jelly, but it will tend to soften and flow, so put a thick cloth under the humidifier to avoid damaging the furniture.

I had an H3i, it did become a bit erratic and I'm sure it was a seating problem. The paste fixed it.

Good luck

The humidifier may not be the problem. You may have begun sleeping with an open mouth, as many of us do (but are unaware of when sleeping), and that will certainly dry you out, as well as making your therapy kind of useless (have you been checking your numbers lately?). You might want to try taping for a few nights to see if there's a change, and if so, consider getting a full face mask.

I am already on the full face from the get go,I am a mouth breather. I will check for air gaps, it may be time for replacement of some parts

As for thermal compound, I work with electronics all day that white stuff tends to get on everything so I will either get this rig to work (aas designed)or get a new one

Mouth-breathing in a full face mask can also result in dry mouth. Too much humidity can also have the effect of closing up one's nasal passages and contribute to mouth-breathing. Maybe you need LOWER or cool (passover) humidity to help breathe through your nose.
Do nasal rinses before bedtime to clear the nasal passages.

I was only proposing thermal compound as a test to see if the seating is the problem. If it solves the problem, then find out why it's not seating. if it doesn't, then you need to look elsewhere

But yeah, messy stuff, i agree

Used another humidifier a 4i and the problem went away , I can see why resmed changed the design by looking at the 4i next to the3i, the heat transfer method is different ( go figure)I had some rain out till I adjusted down the humidity level and that caused some musical moments ( those that use a fisher and paykel 432 full face will know what I am talking about)

I am taking the POS 3i into the local shop CPAP2GO here in milwaukee to see if they can fix it or I will be more than happy to buy a 4i
