Am I going nuts?

Post by stanta » Wed Apr 08, 2009 3:13 am

Got a new Respid M Series this winter and it always seemed that I could hear music in the background when I had it working. Well this morning , at 4am to be exact when I woke I could hear a 1 man laugh track?. I was NOT still sleeping! When I reached over and turned it off the laughing stopped.

Could it be inadvertently picking up a radio signal and sending it down the tube to be heard through my inner ear? Kind of spooky, it's going to be hard to go back to sleep.
always a hosehead, almost a hoser.

Wow, you got the DELUXE model!

That IS weird. And your explanation seems to be the most logical. Either that or it's haunted!

Wonder if the station changes when you increase pressure? (j/k)

You might try turning it 90 degrees to see if it gets stronger, weaker, or garbled.

Assuming this is a belated April Fools post or your aren't nuts, there are two ways I can think of that your machine might pick up these signals.

One is receiving radio waves. For an experiment, I would wrap the CPAP machine with tinfoil and see if it improves. I wouldn't necessarily wrap it tightly so it can still draw in air but you need to atleast cover it from all directions. Anyway, I wouldn't do this while sleeping. Just for a quick check while awake. If it works, try to return it for a replacement because it should be shielded from such an issue. If you can get it replaced, I would consider making a tin foil lined enclosure that won't interfere with airflow.

The second way is through your house power. Although I'd find this unlikely unless you lived in an apartment that shared some of the wall outlets with other apartments or have something running itself on the same circuit. This may be able to be offset by one of those power strips that claim they filter the AC power. They are usually sold with computer equipment.

If its the second cause and you're not running anything in your home, I'd be suspicious about someone stealing your power.

There was another thread about that same situation a few years ago. I tried looking for it, but couldn't narrow down a word to search on that didn't come up with dozens of pages of threads/posts to search through.

So, your answer could be "yes", you could be picking up some sort of signal.
In that other situation, I don't recall how it turned out, but it was a similar set of circumstances.

Well, if your going Nuts, then so am I! I've just ignored it as my imagination all this time.

You have broken my denial!! I just wish it would play a station I liked!!

I can just imagine some poor Cpap User going on a shooting rampage, only to find because they were hearing voices and music. Ah, the torture we suffer!!

later,

SG

If I cock my head the right way, my silver dental fillings will give me stereo.

You know, I bet this has happened since Phillips bought Respironics. Stereo components are being substituted!!

take care,

SG

That be the one!

Thanks so much, Kathy. You've got more patience (or smarts) than I do searching for old posts......especially when the words "radio", "frequency", "signal" were generating so many old threads/posts for me.

DreamStalker,

Thanks for that other link. I don't recall reading that one before.

You forgot the word foil ... that is what I remembered most about the link Kathy came up with.

Hey, I just searched "radio signal" and pulled up 7 old posts most in the same thread.
