Starting to get a rash around my mouth...

Post by talktobon » Mon Apr 06, 2009 7:52 pm

Any tips to prevent my rash from getting worse around my mouth? I'm wondering if it will help if I place a piece of gauze between the mask and me.

Some people have used a gasket made out of T-Shirt material. I think that would leak less than gauze. Did you soak your mask thoroughly for 60 minutes before you used it the first time? They need to be out-gassed, or something. THere is something in the material that makes me welt up and get blisters, too. If you can, switch off to another kind of mask until you heal up.

You could try a light coat of Milk of Magnesia on the skin before masking up. I put on a thin coat of the MOM, wait a minute or 2 for it to dry, tissue off any excess, then mask or tape. Works great as a barrier to the mask or adhesive but still allows a good seal. Mylanta also works but you will find it to be more expensive.

I will try the MOM. The gauze helped last night--just one night made a difference and I think I warded off the worst of it.

Do I soak the mask in just water, or soap/water?

Wash it thoroughly in a GENTLE soap - I use Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile soap. Rinse.

The soak it in a mix of 50-50 white vinegar and water.

Then rinse, and I re-wash it to try to cut the vinegar smell.

Or use Control III Disinfectant. You can get it from https://www.cpap.com I like that alot.

Cheers,
B.
