Understanding Leak Rate Numbers

Post by SoSadBtTrue » Sun Apr 05, 2009 8:37 am

Hi everyone. I just got a new mask yesterday. It is the Fisher Paykel Flexifit 432. I liked it very much. I got all hooked up last night and I couldn't feel any leaks around the edges of the mask. However, when I used the "Mask Fit" function on my Elite 2, it kept saying to adjust the mask. After fiddling around for awhile, I figured if I couldn't feel any leaks, then it was fine. So, I went to sleep.

When I got up this morning, I saw that my reported leak rate for the night was 1.04 L/s. I looked up the 432's instruction manual (http://www.fphcare.com/osa/pdf/HC432/185044542.pdf), and it says that, at a pressure of 10, the leak rate should be about 33.5 L/min. If I divide this by 60, I get 0.56 L/s. So, according to this, my leak rate was double what it should be.

Three questions:
1. Is it usual to have a high leak rate even though I didn't feel any leaks whatsoever? The mask felt the same when I woke up as when I went to sleep (ie, I don't think it shifted in the night).
2. Am I doing this math right? Am I reading the user manual correctly?
3. My Elite 2 was set on Mask Type: Standard. I learned this morning from Resmed's website that it should have been set on Mir Full. Would this make a difference in my reported leak rate?

Thanks again!

I don't know a lot about Resmed machines but if the Resmed says you should set it at Mir Full when using a Flexfit 431, then I would think you should set it that way. I understand that the mask has to be "programmed" into Resmeds. The Mir Full must be the closest to a Flexfit 432.

Try it tonight and see if there is a difference in the leak rate. That's what I would do.
