Beginner's luck?

Post by cpapguru38 » Sat Apr 04, 2009 9:15 am

I suspected I had apnea for years. Always waking 15-20 times per night dry mouth, SUPER loud snoring etc. Tired all the time, headaches, no energy, the works. Went to a small town country doc and he was willing to write me a script for a cpap and comfort gel nasal mask.

Last night was the first time I used my setup. My pressure is set at 8.0. Cflex at 2. Put the mask on after a large glass of wine and hoped for the best. First thing I noticed was that while lying on my back, the exhale resistence was minimal, but when I lay on my side, it seemed to increase causing a slight "anxious" feeling. So, I layed on my back.

I struggled with falling asleep, as usual, but next thing I knew, I woke up. I thought perhaps I had fallen asleep for 10 minutes or so. I looked at the clock and 5 hours had went by!!!!!!!!!! First time in years I can remmber doing that! I had slept for 5 hours straight. I felt like I could have leaped out of bed there, as I felt refreshed. However, I decided to lay there and much to my surpirse, I fell back aslpeep for another two hours.

Today, for the first time in ten years I feel human. I feel rested and refreshed. I forgot what that feeling is like.

Is this feeling too good to be true? Will it last, or did I simply have beginner's luck? Dammn do I feel good today! SLEEP people, do you have any idea how wonderful sleep is? I have not slpet for more then a few hours straight in YEARS and even when I did, I always woke feeling like I had a major hangover. I hope this will last!

I am on Day 2 and I feel awesome today! Isn't it nice not to wake up without that headache and that general "crappy" feeling? My eyes always hurt - all day usually - and I don't feel that today. I guess this is how it used to feel after a good nights rest....it has been so long. Congrats on feeling better - go out and enjoy !!!

Congratulations! Be thankful since it's not that easy for everyone. My sleep doc said 1/3 of people immediately take to CPAP, 1/3 hate it and drop out, and 1/3 tolerate and suffer with it the rest of their lives.

Hi, so glad you did well, but do you mind a word of caution? I'm not sure a 'big' glass of wine is the best thing to take just before bed when you're using Cpap, especially for a newbie, as it could possibly skew results somewhat. Also, lying on your back is supposed to be the worst position for inducing apneas, and you might want to 'experiment' with other positions (and wine-less) to get a better take on how you're really doing (nice buzz notwithstanding ).
