Changing DME and Insurance?

Post by 4pence » Fri Apr 03, 2009 7:42 pm

I was diagnosed with apnea during a sleep study but was unable to sleep at all when I went back for titration. The sleep docs report suggested to my GP that in-home titration would be a good option so for the past 2 months I have used an APAP with modem which downloaded the nights information directly to the DME for transmission to the sleep doc.
Without all the information I was able to get from reading the posts here is no way I would have been sucessful - so now I am turning to the experts for help again.
My experience with the DME has been dreadful! They are 25 miles away using a toll road and I have needed to make numerous visits - they took the machine apart to unpack it but didn't put the filter back in, then the modem didn't work, then the mask was the wrong size, then they realized they had missed having me sign one of the forms. It was also nearly impossible to get a return call from them. After 6weeks I called to find out if they had enough information so that I could get my permanent machine and get rid of the modem (and the DME). 2 Weeks later they said yes, bring back your current unit and we will exchange it for one without a modem.
Based on the information accrued, the doctor had written the prescription for an APAP, however, she had indicated a setting of 10, not a range so the RT refused to give me the APAP and sent me out with a CPAP instead stating that the prescription was unclear - but he would not call the doctor for clarification! He said if the machine was the wrong one I would have to change it. I was upset but very unsure about the situation so thought I should try it, however, the DME had failed to included the power cable so once again I was totally frustrated! This time I started asking around at work and found there is a DME known giving very good service and about the same distance away. What I am unclear about is if I take my prescription to the new DME provider after having rented the other machine for the titration for 2 months will the insurance company look at it as purchasing another new machine?

ah another dme story !!!!!
first off if the prescription said auto on it the rt HAS to set you up with an auto. period. period. undoubtedly incompetent.
one of the biggest problems is the communications betwen drs and dme's. hard to say why.

if it were me ..... i would call my insurance company and explain the situation . ask if there are any other dme's in your coverage network. perhaps that other one is in your coverage . you may want to check to see if you can get your machine and supplies covered by an online dealer. if you have your 'script our host cpap.com may be able to set you up with what you need. granted that upclose and personable service is not next door but they know what they are talkin 'bout. just remember you'll have to pay up front. and get anything told to you by your insurance in writing.

good luck

Thanks fuzzy96, I got the impression my rt was very arrogant. I am also basing this on the response I received when I asked if the machine was data capable - he indicated that the common person would not understand the data so why would I need it. That was before he told me he was not giving me the auto.
I have found out that the dme other users are recommending is in the insurance network so on Monday I am going to start working on the insurance company.
