SIMPLE and effective fix for eye leaks and bridge sore

Post by mountainlvr » Mon Feb 23, 2009 7:30 am

After spending days and days obsessing over how to keep my mouth shut at night with one of my nasal masks, I had dreaded going to bed last night. I wanted to sleep with my Quattro but wasn't going to because of the sore place I get on the bridge of my nose and the eye leaks.

But as I was brushing my teeth with my drawer open, I noticed in the drawer an eyeglass cleaning cloth that my eye doc had given me (before my Lasik!). It is super thin and very soft, almost like a microfiber. So I had and idea.

I cut off a corner of it, so it was a triangular piece, about the size of a quarter of a typical paper napkin. I just placed it over my nose so one of the triangle points was between my eyes and the other two points were on either side of my nose, on my cheeks really, under each eye. Then I put the mask on and what do you know??? Perfect seal, no leaks at eyes and soft and cozy on my nose. I took it off and put a tiny piece of tape on each of the corners, taping it to the outside of the mask, just so it didn't slip during the night.

I slept all night like this, only getting up to use the bathroom once. No leaking, no blowing in my eyes and no sore bridge today!!!!

As with everything, I don't expect it to work forever, but it sure was SIMPLE, FREE, AND EFFECTIVE!!!!!

I will try to post a picture later of what I'm describing, but it's simple as can be. Hope someone else tries it and it works for them too. I was about to tape moleskin to my face, but this stuff is much thinner and softer, and not fuzzy like the moleskin.

Good luck all!

One issue as time goes by will be the cleanliness of the cloth. If you wash it will you ruin its properties? I'm a little nervous about breathing in contaminants from a confined space for 7 hours straight, but then again I am a germaphobe.

thing is, I have several of these cloths, still in their original sealed envelopes. And my eye doc has boxloads of them! You can get them anyplace, I've seen them in all the stores. So if washing it makes it funky in any way then I'll just use another one.

Can't be much worse than any of the other fixes out there.

We'll see, time will tell.

I've washed mine many times with no ill effect. They may be coated with something that makes them more effective for cleaning glasses, I don't know. But they still clean glasses effectively after washing, and besides - we aren't talking about their cleaning properties for this application. So wash away!

Are these the little cloths used with you have the Crizal anti-glare coating on eyeglass lenses? I'm thinking maybe not, since I haven't seen them in stores. It's a really soft, thin cloth, right?

Has anybody tried a piece of worn out cotton t-shirt? I tend to cut them into small rag size that are useful in house and garage and I suppose everybody must have some around.

I can see it now, Karen will be making the "Perfect Mask Seal" and sell them by the dozen. "Don't wash that mask, simply toss the 'Perfect Mask Seal' in the laundry and put on a clean one." No charge for that one Karen!

I made a gasket out of thin T Shirt material the other night. Having that extra stuff touching my face made it very hard to sleep. I woke up many more times than usual and finally took it off in the wee hours of the morning. Checking my leak line the next day, and it was 10 points higher with the gasket. I might try the eyeglass cloth after I catch up on my lost sleep.

I have had alot of trouble with the bridge of my nose being very sore and red too. A few days ago I made a strap cover out of soft flannel. I sewed the cover for the forehead piece and attached a small piece of flannel to the bottom of the cover, so it kinda looks like a flap hanging off the bottom of the cover.. I cut out the edges of the piece of cloth so it wouldn't be close to my eyes. I have worn it for the last few nights and it has worked perfectly. My nose is still alittle red but not nearly as sore as it was.
I dont suffer from insanity.... I enjoy every minute of it!

A small piece of moleskin about 3/4 high and 1 inch wide with the two top corners chamfered (cut off) and stuck to your nose does the same thing. You can re-use it a few times, but it is thicker and provides good padding to the nose as well as helping leaks into the eyes. I have been using this successfully for nearly 9 months after nearly giving up on my full face ResMed Ultra Mirage Mask.

I've found it lasts longer to stick it to the mask skirt. Also, if your nose is already chafed, the moleskin adhesive can easily peel the top layer of skin off in the morning, leaving your nose worse than it was.

Hi,
I know that many of you are able to fix your sore nose bridge with a variety of solutions. If you do not have the desire to do it yourself, there are solutions available.
This is my design to help the nose bridge soreness.

I hope everyone finds a solution that works for them.

Thanks Karen! I've read several descriptions of the Padacheek "flap", but your picture is worth 1,000 words! Thanks for sharing that...
