Sleep study aborted

Post by sweetie » Sat Oct 18, 2008 9:51 am

Here's a first for me! I went to have a sleep study last night at the hospital. This was not my first sleep study. She got me all "wired up" and went to bed around 11pm (I was told to get there at 10pm). All was going well, she started at 4 and got up to 12. At 3am she woke me up to say that the computer crashed at 2am and was working with tech support but not able to get it going again. She said in the past they would be able to restart the computer and restart the study then combine the data. She asked if I wanted to stay but I told her I would go home.
Has anyone ever experienced that?

Just make sure they don't charge you OR your insurance.

How difficult is it to have a backup computer around???

this happened to my cousin, he opted to go home and was rescheduled for another study at no cost.
yeah, they should have a backup, going through that could scare away someone on their first time, when they really need it.

I almost got sent home at the beginning of one of my studies. They had all the rooms full and something was going weird with my room and the computer. They got it working okay, thankfully. I did end up staying all night and everything was fine.

I almost had an aborted study last month. The clinic I went to has two rooms, and after she'd got me all wired up, the clinician discovered that no data was reaching the computer. Apparently they'd done some kind of upgrade that day, and something was amiss.

The other room was empty, so she moved me over there. Everything was fine equipment-wise, but I was having trouble breathing at first because our 3.5 year old had shared his cold with me. I got up and used my neti pot, but even then I was having trouble. She suggested I might want to reschedule, but I decided to keep trying. Glad I did: things settled down, and around 4 AM she hit the magic combination of 14/11 on BiPAP. Everything was good for the next three hours.

On the other hand--and at the other end--I did have a colonoscopy rescheduled because of computer failure. The doctor asked if I could come back the next day, and I said sure--so long as I don't have to drink that stuff again. Oh, no, he said. The next day, all was well.

Anyway, Sweetie, good luck with the next appointment. And make sure they don't charge anybody anything for the sleep study that wasn't!

Unfortunately things like this sometimes to happen. I work part time in a sleep lab (as an assistant, not as a tech), and just like any job, sometimes technology does not want to cooperate. I know the place I work has a guy who his sole job is the computer system, upgrades, all of that, but sometimes there is only so much you can do at a certain point, and you know that you do need a certain amount of data for a sleep study, not only to get insurance coverage, but also so the tech/doctors can properly read it. If the computer system has been wonky for too long, there is just no point in continuing on, as you are going to have to have the person come back anyway.

as for having the "backup computer" I think you guys can probably imagine that would again, take time to switch over, take money to have every single sleep center have two computers for every bed, and really, what if its not a problem with the computer, nearly every part of the equipment used in a sleep study is electronic, there is only so much you can control, unfortunately.
