flying & letter of medical necessity

Post by echo » Fri Aug 15, 2008 9:02 am

just FYI - I recently flew to Turkey with my cpap. No problems getting in. On the way back out, while checking in at the airport, they asked for the Letter of Medical Necessity for the CPAP, and even took a photocopy of it. I don't know what would have happened if I didn't have the letter (lots of arguing?). They did know what the thing was, but wanted the letter for their records.

Never had this happen while flying to the U.S. Not sure about Europe - I haven't flow within Europe since getting my CPAP.

Moral of the story: take the letter with you when you're flying overseas!

OH and as for content, all it says, on hospital letterhead is:
Hospital Info - addresss etc

DECLARATION
Ms Echo suffers from a severe obsstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Therefore she/he needs lifelong therapy with a nasal CPAP-device during the night. This device does not carry any pressurized gas or software. So it can be safely carried on board of an airplane.

Don't have any flights planned overseas in the near future but I guess the old addage applies here, "Better safe than sorry". The letter should not be much of a problem to get so even when flying in the US it might be a good idea. Thanks!
